Take the promotion making yourself smaller against your wants to please someone else never ends well
AITAH for accepting a promotion my boyfriend doesnt want me to take because he says itll change our relationship I got offered a promotion at work. A real one. Not a lateral move not a fancy new title with the same pay. An actual step up. More responsibility better money and honestly something Ive been grinding toward for a long time. When they told me I almost cried in the meeting because Ive wanted this for years. I came home that night so excited to tell my boyfriend. Thought hed be happy for me. Thought wed celebrate. Maybe open a bottle of wine and talk about what this could mean for our future together. IG & Threads: @ask_aubry THE Instead he got quiet. Then he started asking questions. But not excited questions. Worried ones. Like how many more hours are you gonna be working. Does this mean no more spontaneous weekends. Are you gonna be stressed all the time now. He said this isnt the life I pictured for us. The life HE pictured. Not the life WE talked about. The life he decided we were supposed to have. Which apparently involves me staying exactly where I am professionally so that things stay comfortable and easy for him. He keeps talking about how he wants a simple life. Less stress. Less ambition. More time just hanging out and being chill. And I get that. I love our chill time too. But Im also a person with goals and this opportunity means something to me. Its not just about money its about me feeling like Im actually going somewhere. tried to reassure him. Told him a promotion doesnt mean I turn into some corporate robot who never comes home. I said wed figure out the balance together. I asked him to trust me that I can handle more responsibility without abandoning our relationship. He wasnt hearing it. He said hed seen it happen before with other couples and that once one person starts climbing the ladder the relationship always suffers. He said he didnt sign up for that. Didnt sign up for what. For me succeeding? For me wanting more than what I have right now? That part really stung. THE END Every time I bring up anything work related he gets this look on his face like Im already choosing my job over him just by being excited about it. And I feel like I cant even be happy about this huge thing that happened to me because his reaction has completely overshadowed it I havent officially accepted yet but I know Im going to. AlTA for considering a breakup after boyfriend bailed on being my surgery ride? I (29F) have been with my boyfriend (39M) for about a year and a half. He's kind, social, and really busy. Early on he told me he's "bad at planning," which I accepted. In reality, it meant I adapted to him. Our time together was usually "probably Friday" or "maybe Sunday," and I'd wait until the day of to know if we were actually seeing each other. IG & Threads: @ask Over time, I've noticed I was basically the only flexible part of his life. He never misses poker night, gym class, or frequent family dinners. Those are always set, but with me, plans stay loose. I stopped pushing and just opted to keep my schedule open, telling myself that if I wanted to see him, this was how it worked. There have been some occasions where plans were kept. We've been on two vacations, for instance, but when it comes to more routine life, this is the pattern I've noticed. Last night, I told him how bothered I was, he said I was being unfair because I know how he is with planning and that I hadn't really stressed the importance of this. To be fair, I don't think I had mentioned the uber thing to him prior. But, through the conversation, it just seemed to me that this was nothing to do with the details. I just wasn't being prioritized. I realized I've been enabling this by staying vague, available, and accepting scraps because it felt easier than asking for more. I told him I don't want to continue like this and that this affected my ability to trust him in a serious situation. He says I'm overreacting and punishing him for a one-time mistake that is partly on me. Some friends say I trained him to treat me this way and I should try to salvage. I feel done. It does bother me, but in the end, he is available and we see each other pretty frequently. And when we do see each other, he is focused and attentive. I guess that's why I put up with it. It felt like a planning issue not really a priorities issues, or a quality time issue. But last week, something changed in me. I had a medical procedure scheduled one morning, a minor surgery but I did go under, and I couldn't drive afterward (or take a ride share; bc the hospital won't let you). He had told me earlier in the week that he'd be free and would take me. That morning, he texted saying he'd forgotten and had already committed to helping a friend move. He suggested I take an Uber and said we'd "make it up another time." (??) I explained that I couldn't and that this was surgery and I'd really like to not have to worry about this at 6:30AM day of. He caved but was standoffish when he picked me up which obviously was not great after being intubated.

Does anybody else have a male friend who tracks their period? So I've been friends with this guy for over a year now. He always used to say how much he was into me and everything but that mostly stopped. He does generally watch my eating habits and check the calendar and say things like "oh yeah I guess it's about that time." I hate it! The other day he tried to make a bet with me on weather I'll get it on Wednesday or not. Like bro who cares! I went to the bathroom earlier (we work together) and when I came back he was like "do you feel better now?" Bro can I not take ten minutes to shit in peace!? Sorry this turned into a mini rant but idk what to do.i don't wanna lose him as a friend but it gets old.

AlTA for taking a coloring book back from my niece after she got attached to it? I (27F) live with my husband (31M). We've been married about a year and a half. Overall things are good, but we're still figuring out boundaries, especially around our stuff. I collect Hello Kitty and Sanrio items. Nothing extreme, but I have a small display shelf in the living room and a few related things on the bookshelf. Most of it is stuff I've picked up over the years. I fell in love with Hello Kitty as a kid when I lived in Japan, and after my family moved to the US I stopped seeing it around, so collecting it now feels a little nostalgic. IG & Threads: @ask Last year I went back to Japan to visit my grandparents and found these really nice Sanrio coloring books. They're not like the cheap kids' ones at the store. The paper is thicker, the art is really detailed, and I bought them more as nostalgic collectibles than something for random kids to use. Yesterday on my lunch break, I saw her looking at my shelf. She asked if she could touch some of the figures, and I said yes, as long as she was very careful and put them back. I assumed she meant the ones she could already reach/JUST the figures she was asking about at that exact moment. Later, I came out to grab a snack and saw her coloring at the table. At first I thought it was a normal coloring book, but then I realized it was one of the ones I brought back from Japan I didn't want to upset her, but I thought I set pretty clear guidelines and 6 seems old enough to understand that to me. I could be wrong. so I just said, "Maybe we can find another book for you to color in." She was really into it, and my husband laughed and said we should just let her keep it since she'd already started coloring in it. I quietly told him I'd rather not and that we could easily buy her a different book. He brushed it off and said I was overthinking it. I didn't want to argue in front of her, so I dropped it. That night, after she went to sleep, I saw he had packed the coloring book into her backpack. That bothered me, because it felt like he'd decided to give away something of mine without asking. So I took it out and shoved it under a couch cushion lol. I know it seems so dramatic but I just knew if I put it back on the shelf it would wind up back in her bag. The next morning she had a meltdown looking for it. Crying, screaming, meltdown. We explained when her mot You should be really disappointed in him. He gave away something that was important to you without a single thought. I would be locking up my collection after that. That's the type of blatant disregard that leads me to believe he would get rid of her stuff... he knew she didn't want him to give away her coloring book and tried to do it anyway. AlTAH for ending things with my boyfriend after his dad told me I should quit my career to take care of his son I dont usually post stuff like this online but I cant stop thinking about it and I need people who dont know us to tell me if Im crazy. I was with my boyfriend for almost three years. I loved him. Like genuinely thought this was it for me. We lived together and I thought we were a team. I work full time and Im in school getting my degree because want to get into healthcare. Its been exhausting balancing both but I want a career and Im not giving that up for anyone. His dad lives far away so I never met him until a few weeks ago when he came to visit. First night we all sit down for dinner and his dad starts asking me all these questions. Am I cooking for his son. Am I keeping the house clean. Am I making sure hes comfortable when he gets home from work. I said yeah I do all of that. Which is true. AlO my boyfriend works harder so I have to handle all the household things? My boyfriend and I live together and both have full time jobs. My job is a true corporate 9-5 hybrid and i make decent money considering my position. He works for his families restaurant so his hours are way different, he comes home late and works 6 days a week and makes double the money that I do. Pretty quickly after we first met he bought a condo and that I then moved into with him and pay him rent. So far i've been taking care of all the cooking, cleaning, dishes, laundry, grocery shopping, clothes shopping etc. pretty much everything except 50% of the time he takes out the trash. IG & Threads: @ask aubry Last night we got into a tiff because i told him that he needs to stop giving me crap (even though he says he's joking) about not heating up his food when he comes home late that i bought, cooked, and cleaned up after 5 hours earlier. All the other chores go this way, he asks me where his pants are after i wash them and he asks me to wake him up when he has to go into work early. I stopped doing some of the things for him and last night he said he needed me to do alll that to help him out He also added that he works so hard and so much and the fact that he pays more rent than I do that it should be me picking up the slack on all the household chores. This last comment was what sent me over the edge. AlO to be so mad at him for that comment? i know i'm appreciated and he spends a lot of quality time with me because it means a lot but do I have to suck it up and nag him about the chores? or is he out of line for saying he pays more so i have to do everything else on my own?

AlTA: Mid-30s couple with an 8-month-old: am I being unreasonable about a short camping trip? My wife and I are in our mid-30s. We have an 8- month-old baby and a dog. We do not have family help nearby, but we do have close friends who can help in an emergency. My wife is currently on full- time maternity leave, and we are breastfeeding. I (the husband) work from home full-time and love camping. I did not go on any camping trips during the first 8 months because I wanted to be fully present and adjust to life with a newborn. During this time, my wife and baby also spent a couple of months staying with her parents while I stayed back at home with the dog. I was fully supportive of this and encouraged her to spend as much time there as she wanted. I now have a 3-night (4-day) camping trip coming up. It feels like we have had time to settle into our new routine, and I feel it should be okay for me to go. I also have a couple of unavoidable 5-night work trips coming up in the next few months. To make sure my wife also gets a break, we have already done a couple of 2-night Airbnb trips close to our city. Right after my camping trip, I have planned a 3-night family trip so we can spend quality time together and so she can feel refreshed. Despite this, my wife keeps saying that other husbands would not go on a camping trip while they have an 8-month-old at home. I am struggling with this and feel hurt and frustrated that, despite being intentional about family time and planning trips for us, I still have to justify a short personal trip. Am I being unreasonable in thinking that an 8- month adjustment period is enough to take a 3- night camping trip, or am I missing something important here? Man approaches me in polite conversation, stops talking to me when he realizes I am a college-educated adult I get approached by a lot of men who say "hello", "how are you doing", "the weather's nice today", and things of that nature on a regular basis. I also live in an area with very few black people, so I try to be polite when approached by another black person since it's so rare to see another black person in public. This man, who was black and appeared to be in his late thirties, struck up a conversation with me on my way to the grocery store. "Hello, how are you doing today?" he asks. I'm doing good." He notices I'm wearing a backpack. "Are you a student?" "Yes." "Cool, what school?" "*name of university I attend*" He looks surprised. "You're in college?" "Yup." This is a red flag for me since he approached me on the presumption that I was a high school student, so I give answers as brief as possible in hopes that he ends the conversation. He asks, "What do you study?" "Chemical engineering". "Nice! I used to study electrical engineering at UC Berkeley. Normally telling men my major is enough to deter them, but not today. I figured I was locked in this predicament for a minute. "Neat." I reply. He asks, "What year are you?" "4th year PhD Candidate." He appears genuinely shocked and stops making eye contact with me. "Wow! You must be really smart!" "Yup." "Well, guess I better head to the grocery store." He walks into the store. Even though we were shopping at the same store, he stopped looking at me and appeared to be actively avoiding me. I realized my major was not the thing that deterred him, but the revelation that I was old enough to be pursuing a PhD. Although I was still at least 10 years younger than him, he seemed to be intimidated by that fact. This has happened to me on multiple occasions, but this most recent interaction is the clearest example on how much easier it has been for me to avoid random men. My occupation has scared off way more men than the fact that I am queer or have a fiancé. These types of men are not just interested in people that appear young, but have the immaturity and lack of life experience associated with youth. Does anyone else have an experience like this where someone approaches you on the assumption that you're young, and backtracks when realizing otherwise?

Why do women hate being mommy, to men? Question For Women Asking it on behalf of those men, who would want that. This is a double standard I often notice. They want husbands who are pliable and under their sphere of influence. They expect men to open the doors and, clean the house be equal. Basically be like their servant. But they run away the moment you expect them to show a bit more love and nurture you. They call you needy and what not. Underneath, all that, they just want to have the cake and eat it too. I am 35 weeks pregnant and my son (21 months) and I caught a stomach virus this week (throwing up and diarrhea). I am fatigued from not being able to eat, I am anemic, and I am extremely exhausted from pregnancy... and have been taking care of my son while my husband works from home. My husband sleep in two different bedrooms (he snores and I am a light sleeper). I also co-sleep with my son since lifting him in and out of the crib all night is too difficult with my belly (he has never slept through the night and I have some placenta complications so I am not supposed to be lifting him). My husband said he would start taking my son at night so that my son can become more comfortable with the crib, so that we can start preparing for when the new baby arrives... which I will 100% be on my own for night feedings since I am breastfeeding. IG & Threads: @ask aubry However, he always has an excuse on why he can't take him at night (he's too tired, he got bad sleep last night, he doesn't want to get sick and I'm already sick, etc). I am to the point of my pregnancy where it is very difficult to get comfortable at night (really bad heartburn, round ligament pain, hip pain, back pain) but I am still expected to do it. Last night I had to get up 3 times to change my toddlers diarrhea diaper and 4 times to give him Pedialyte. Between that I couldn't sleep due to my own discomforts of pregnancy. My neck is now extremely stiff from the rough night so I sent him this text and this was his response.... I said nothing in response but bawled my eyes out privately. I am told I'm "too emotional" when I'm pregnant. Am I just being emotional/dramatic? Or am I really alone

I don't want my wife, who changed her mind about having more kids, treat this decision as a neutral thing and made it clear I need her to hold space for my grief Before we got married, my wife and I were very aligned on having multiple children. We talked about it as a real part of our future. We're financially very comfortable, work isn't a limiting factor, and building a larger family was something I genuinely looked forward to and planned my life around. After our first child, my wife changed her mind. Pregnancy and childbirth were much harder on her than she expected and she now feels strongly that she's done. I respect that. I'm not trying to pressure her into another pregnancy or argue about her bodily autonomy. What I'm struggling with is everything after that decision. Her decision changed the course of my life too and what I envisioned so I need her to see it. For me, this wasn't just "okay, we'll have one instead of two or three." It felt like losing an entire future I had already mentally committed to. And I feel like I'm expected to just accept that quietly and move on, because she had a valid reason for changing her mind. Our couples therapist encouraged me to open up and I told her I need her to acknowledge that by changing her mind, I lost something real and that loss matters, even if she had every right to make the choice she did. I don't want this to be something I mull over while we pretend everything is fine. I need us to actually tend to it, not sweep it under the rug. Our therapist suggested to my wife she does regular check-ins about how I'm coping, and the ability to grieve without it being framed as me trying to pressure her or guilt her into changing her mind.
