A BLOOMY HEAD is my first historical romance, set in 1820 Shropshire. Dr. Thomas Holyoke has been unceremoniously ejected by a horrible injury from the British military, and finds himself being taken home to the chaotic family of his surgical assistant, Henry Gravenor.

Bedtime bump. Practically there. Any extra goes to affording a better mattress. $300ish is the budget for very cheap bed frame and mattress which likely will not last long.
I have to raise another $300ish dollars to afford a bed frame and a mattress for the move. I had to spend $250 on glasses. If anyone can help, I would be so grateful. Otherwise, I will be sleeping on the floor and I’m not physically capable of that. I’m sorry. Thank you.

They fired every Black woman at Teen Vogue and every trans staffer.

It is astonishing watching the American media ecosystem just falling like dominoes, bowing its knees to fascism.
thank you for all the support; the statement from our union is now live here with some more reporting.

now that this is public I can confirm that the majority of today’s layoffs were women of color. there are no longer any Black women working at Teen Vogue.

A great resource: Budget Bytes. All the recipes are tested, costed out, and have step by step instructions. My favorite dish from the site is the turkey and feta meatballs, but I make a lot of their recipes! www.budgetbytes.com

Today has been hard. The weight of all that has happened this year is crushing my heart a little. The thought of everything that needs to be done, of how hard I have always and will always have to work just to barely make ends meet feels like drowning today.

I'll rally. But god today.

I went full-time at my retail job this year, which is also the year I have made more money than I ever have before from writing. shit’s hard out here and I like having disposable income.
Many full time creatives have “invisible safety nets” like bread-winning partners, trust funds, external support, etc. No shame on anyone, but it creates a false vision of success. The cost of going to cons alone on top of hoping to eat as a freelancer are untenable, IMO.
When people hear that I'm returning to part time work they often ask "are things not going well with your art?"

The problem really is things are going well, but the world is so unstable that I long for some consistency and income that I don't have to pay quarterly taxes on

re last post: I have lived with someone who I watched repeatedly get takeout instead of paying their utility bill. It sucked! I hated it!

But I am very careful about generalizing from that weird, bad experience to what other people can or should do.

one of the things we see reasonably often at checkout in my store are people who are distraught when they find out that the already-cooked rotisserie chickens are not covered by their SNAP benefits.
it gets tiring to keep explaining what it means to be poor to people.

it is not that poor people don’t know that cooking is cheaper:

cooking costs time. it costs pots and pans. it costs a working stove and your utilities on. it costs you’ve been on your feet all day and your babies are tired.

One of the major fruits of research is delight. Think of how often you’ve read about a discovery and really enjoyed it. Often the most pleasurable kind of news. Public delight isn’t discussed enough as one of the major outputs of funding research.
I strongly recommend everyone do research sometimes 𝘫𝘶𝘴𝘵 𝘧𝘰𝘳 𝘧𝘶𝘯.

Look something up on Wikipedia. Go to the little citation. Follow it. Read the article it's referencing. Follow links to the original interview. Read the paper written by the interviewee

It genuinely makes you appreciate journalism

my empathy does not extend to people who, upon hearing a new language, are not filled with craving to find textbooks/basic baby grammar videos/children’s books in that language.

the world is offering you a chance to learn and grow, which is fucking precious, okay?
if you cannot cope with hearing other languages spoken on a daily basis i have real concerns about whether your cognitive and emotional abilities are sufficient to partake in the society of adult humans
