This seems like a good idea, really. So! "Tweety Fish" is my (auld) hacker handle; I am in the Cult of the Dead Cow. I have a PhD in vision science, I apply it to machine learning. I had a startup trying to make autonomous cars less bad for pedestrians (didn't work; they're bad) but now am free.
There's been an avalanche of new sign ups, so it's time for reintroductions.

Hi. I'm Andrew. I am a deep-sea ecologist and conservation technologist. My work orbits around how humans use and misuse technology to explore, exploit, protect, and plunder the hardest to reach places on the planet.

this is kinda-sorta true everywhere but a lot less true in older, denser urban neighborhoods. car-centric suburbs, like cars themselves, are designed in ways that encourage people to be isolated and selfish.
Not that this is the thing keeping me back from homeowning right now (lol), but: it is hard to think of a block or area of homeowners I'd ever like to live among, if I were ever to land a home, at least in the US. Homes make a lot of people their worst selves, weirdly enough.
Nothing like a proposal for a modest amount of lower-income housing nearby to find out who your neighbors are.

To reiterate: aiming a firearm at a non-violent bystander who is not resisting arrest or posing any threat is an illegal use of force and possibly a crime.

This ICE agent should be investigated for misconduct. No one is above the law.
ICE agent points firearm at woman in car filming in Santa Ana, prompting police response
The agent, who identified himself to police, said the woman was following and filming him Sunday afternoon.

Yesterday, when Bovino announced ICE would be returning to Little Village today, some of us donated and fundraised to buy out street vendors in the neighborhood. This morning, volunteers hit the streets at 6:30 am, looking for vendors to buy out. Tamales make an excellent breakfast.

I am still on board with "technology has no inherent moral valence" but boy you can really spot the technological changes that act as amplifiers for "destruction is generally easier than creation"
i think it's very bad that "agentic disinformation network, agentic nation-state level black hat, agentic revenge porn at scale" all occurred and were funded before "AI PowerPoint slide deck creation that actually looks nice" got solved

You can make the case that Zoomers are drinking more or less as much as previous generations when adjusting for spending power, expressed v. revealed preference, size of populations, etc. There is no case that they're the "most alcohol-addicted [...] generation in history," though. What? No.
I was reading the excellent @winterjessica.bsky.social review of Scott Galloway's new book, and it is where I became aware that Gavin Newsom just let this claim from Charlie Kirk stand.

It's just wildly false; Gen Z drinks less and uses fewer drugs

In the century leading up to 1975, nearly 6000 freighters went down in the Great Lakes.

The Edmund Fitzgerald was the last.

The last. In 50 years, not a single commercial freighter has been lost in the Great Lakes.

Why?

It's NOAA. Of course it's NOAA.

A Q Division team has been traveling the globe, collecting all of Bond's illegitimate children to train them at a daycare deep beneath MI6 headquarters, equipping them with explosive binkies and teddy bears that turn into emergency parachutes. Their country needs them: naptime will have to wait
this is a clear opportunity the man likely has children scattered across the globe

A subtle one that's easy to miss, but the fact that Andreesen and Musk both use "alpha" as slang for "information advantage" is a clear tell that their mental world is finance, not technology. They try to talk otherwise but they are investors not inventors.
*maximum alpha at 1.25x speed* continuously lives on in my head, unfortunately.

Stay and fight. From New York: if you register as an independent, you can't vote in the primary. And in a blue state like NY, primaries can be more decisive than general elections. And in general elections, you can vote on the Working Families Party line and signal the Dems you're a progressive.
Right, the answer isn't to abandon the party to these weasels.

The answer is to flood the party with people who will take it over and transform it.
Hey, a lot of people are talking about changing affiliation from Democratic to Independent.

Let me tell you why you shouldn’t do that in Colorado.

One of the main ways to get a primary challenge candidate on a ballot is to caucus for your party. You need to be registered as a Dem to caucus.
