i don't have a good enough sense of how congress works to understand whether this is a surprise or not. the cave caucus had a deal with thune in the senate, right? i.e., did johnson actually renege on anything here, or is he just being his normal hitler's-accountant-ass self?
In the most predictable development ever, Mike Johnson is not committing to hold a House vote on ACA subsidies

Buried inside the deal to reopen government is a provision that would give Senators private right of action to sue for millions in damages over their phone records being analyzed by Jack Smith's team.

senate wallet inspector putting up hall of fame numbers these days
Whoa -- Sen. Durbin went to up Leader Thune during the vote last night to tell him that on the shutdown vote and ACA promise that "8 of us are sticking our neck out that you're going to keep your word. I hope you will. He said 'I assure you I will,'" Durbin says just now

always fun to remember that he was hillary's running mate in 2016. really nicely frames up his role leading the dem cave here.
Kaine on why he thinks just getting a vote on healthcare is a win: "We're the minority party, but everybody will get to see who is standing for them when it comes to lowering their healthcare costs"

Warner staffer in DC this morning seemed confused when I inquired whether he had a position on a Senate leadership change. In the sense of like... surprised that such a thing would even be up for discussion. N of 1, obviously. But, y'know.
Warner is up for reelection. He was widely seen driving towards surrender behind the scenes, but he's voting no in public because it's unpopular. The real question is whether he supports a senate leadership change. If not, someone who supports senate leadership change should primary him.
But I cannot support a deal that still leaves millions of Americans wondering how they are going to pay for their health care or whether they will be able to afford to get sick.

Rand Paul, hemp's strongest soldier in the Senate, told Politico last night that he still plans to try to drag out the shutdown for as long as possible over its de facto ban of THC (which he first signaled he'd do early last week in a convo with hemp trade groups.)

After not accepting voicemails last night, Kaine's DC office line is currently jammed this morning lol
Shaheen is retiring; Virginia is solid enough Blue territory that Kaine shld be replaced by a Democrat who is serious about preserving American democracy.

I get lots of pushback from normies in Virginia, and especially here in Richmond, who insist @kaine.senate.gov actually has a spine and isn’t just a functional Republican like @markwarner.bsky.social. Anyway
Deal has been reached, I’m told by multiple sources, and Kaine has announced his support

Of note: neither the Richmond office nor the DC office of @kaine.senate.gov is accepting voicemails, which iirc is a recent development. @markwarner.bsky.social’s is (for now lol)
3/ the two from Virginia. Possibly Blunt Rochester as well. I want to emphasize that as we move down that list things get fuzzier. Lots of chatter and rumor. Figure in lots of uncertainty even for the people at the center of decisions when you’re to the maybes. But here is the critical point….
