im of the opinion that any narrative right now needs to have a villain and address the rank inequality and corruption going on. doesn't feel like utopian vision time
the "high/low floor, high/low ceiling" thing is a pretty common sports analogy, I don't know if it's a good or bad slogan and I don't trust the people pitching it but I don't think it's as impenetrable to understand as some people are trying to make it sound

I would collude with the other capitalists to raise prices and fees until we had scooped up everyone's Universal Basic Income. We'd get it pretty quick.
Honest question: If everyone got Universal Basic Income, no strings attached, what would YOU do with it?

this is where I am at, because I feel like the mindset that we need to "explore" "AI" and "what it has to offer" just leads to an unresolvable contradiction. it's basically this dril tweet tbh, I'm sure I'm not the first to make this comparison

Analysis: OpenAI is a loss-making machine, how can it survive?
Don't call it a bubble! Loss-making monster OpenAI is on the hook for $1.4 trillion (with a T) in compute commitments. How can this go on?

i think it's useful to look at areas where the *tech* has gotten much better while tech *interactions* have gotten way worse. streaming has gotten worse, google search has gotten worse, digital cameras are leaps better. apple's silicone is so good it's threatening their user upgrade cycle
it’s so weird to look around and realize like, tech and media are materially worse than a decade ago

I think it’s reasonable to hypothesize that evangelicalism causes brain damage. Someone should study their brains after they die like they do with football players.

It does basically suck that you can't be an actual abolitionist and be mayor in any place in the US really, because you will be brutally and probably openly murdered by your own cops
We are so fucked when Mamdani inevitably does something a typical Major Blue City mayor would do, like sic cops on protesters or cut the ribbon on Goldman Sachs' new building or whatever.

We're all going to need to get real cool with how much weird parochialism comes with this particular job.

“During days of torture and abuse, an Israeli soldier carved a Star of David into Ahmad’s back with a knife. Another soldier carved a smiley face into Nadia’s father’s neck.”

This happened *at a university* in Gaza.

And yet our institutions still collaborate with Israeli schools.

I still reflexively scan the lot for good sleeping spots when I pull into a Walmart, and also shudder at the thought of ever living that life again. It's been years. And yes, I had a full time job at better than minimum wage.
"Homelessness today isn't just the person sleeping outside a Walmart. It's often the cashier or worker stocking the shelves inside."

I joined @pbsnews.org to talk about There Is No Place for Us and the staggering rise of the "working homeless":

This is a legitimate scientific revolution in meteorology.

Also, to be clear, these models are not the AI LLMs that most people are familiar with. They are machine learning algorithms trained on observations (actually reanalysis).

Then came the push to start using AI as part of our subtitling flows.

"It'll save time and money, because translators can just post-edit!"

Never mind the fact that we spent hundreds of thousands of dollars on purchasing AI licenses, it didn't lead to much improvement in translation speed.

Why? Because "they want to save time and money".

Let me give some insight on this, as a producer in the dub industry who worked with major streamers, who's witnessed first-hand where this push for AI is coming from.

tl;dr: Only CEOs want this. Tell them how much you hate it. Be loud, email, call, @, post. You will kill this.

🧵⬇️
The only thing less human than these AI dub performances is the decision to sign off on them

A company this big can pay human actors a decent wage, not produce slop that intentionally removes the human element.
