i'm a very biased party here but pretty much everything about the Mamdani campaign and the discourse around it thus far is a pretty thorough vindication of Africana Studies
It is worth saying that putting “Africana studies” in scare quotes as if it’s a ridiculous concept is not a political argument. It’s just racism. “Africa is not worthy of a major” is the implication. Yeah dude you’re just racist. (From Gerard Baker at the WSJ today)

Im late to mocking klein's essay, but lmfao at complaining about the internal disagreement of a primary in Maine, praising internal disagreement as key, and then not saying anything about Cuomo going independent or the dems negating the Buffalo dem primary win for India Walton. Jfc, dude. Jfc.

i think i would honestly find this whole discourse more tolerable if people simply said what they were actually saying, which is that they think the Democratic Party is too associated with femininity (and secondarily, with black people) and that they want to correct this

It decreased inequality by squeezing the middle. It does not show any increase in low wage earning, just in low wage labor employment.
"In the factory, AI increases employment of low-skilled workers by making machines more productive and easier to operate.... Because the effect on production workers dominates, AI increases employment and decreases inequality." 👀 cepr.org/voxeu/column...

i find this image so fascinating. it is both a literal example of authoritarianism but also a second-hand reproduction of the aesthetics of other authoritarian states. it's like a simulacra of authoritarianism whose purpose is to attempt to make the simulacra real.
This is a real photograph of Washington, DC this week, where the United States president has ordered military occupation in peacetime, and ordered the display of colossal portraits of himself.

Honestly this feels like a constitutional crisis.
*Powell needs to issue a quick statement pushing back.
*Will Trump try to use force to bar Cook from working?
*Assuming we get to litigation, will SCOTUS fold and go along with Trump's for "cause" rationale?

Another read is not that SCOTUS is shy about confronting Trump but that they're basically on board with his project but would be embarrassed about the legal arguments they'd have to make if they upheld his actions on the merits, so they find procedural means to let him get his way.
1. Earlier, I said SCOTUS was ducking confrontations with Trump by "channeling" them to less effective places. Maybe better words are "fragmenting" them. Curbing nationwide injunctions. Scattering Alien Enemy Act cases to all 94 districts. Dividing funding challenges... bsky.app/profile/stev...

I swear you will not find a funnier, straight-faced text today than this *official* article by the totes-real University of Austin that wants you to know that there's a place where students debate Aristotle... over brisket.

The way to separate correlation from causation is to use modern research designs like RDD or diff-in-diff. When you can compare how progressives and moderates do in elections *all else equal*, you see no effect of ideology.

This is the Trump era. Ideology is not driving voting.

If I were the Atlantic, I’d simply not let a fascist Manhattan Institute weirdo keep writing the same article about how all cities (by which he clearly means Black Americans) are scary

The moral panic over students using their free speech to express opinions conservatives disagreed with was never a genuine threat to free speech, though.

It was always about suppressing student speech because richer and more powerful people didn't like what they had to say.
"Fake moral panic"

FIRE pointed problems out where it saw them. Your problem is with the people in office. "You shouldn't say anything that someone with bad intent should misuse even if it's right" is stupid position worth Erp consideration.

One of the most infuriating interviews by Klein I've listened to. Just zero pancakes to farcical claims.
I’m sorry when your interviewing a far right “Nationalist Conservative” and he claims that Stephen Miller is not racist (or “racialist”) you (Klein) need to push back harder and not just accept that.
