In a world of rising hatred, I am grateful to read stories of people rushing to help others. Bravo, Ahmed al-Ahmed,

In a world of rising division, we must resist hatred and antisemitism.

I hope that xenophobes & islamophobes are taught a lesson by al-Ahmed's actions.

“Ahmed knew they were Jews. He is a human being. He wanted to save their lives and would do it again. He didn't care about their religion or nationality," said Ahmed's lawyer, Sam Issa.

...Except if we see the anti-trans madness as the analogue of the 1880s-1930s antisemitism - a fundamentally warped worldview that reads absolutely everything wrong in the world with a small minority perceived as "subverting the natural order of the world" and being all the more threatening because

The society I want to live in is one where agents of the state are filled with vast, debilitating dread if they even stare too long at a person without a warrant.

With the greatest respect Esther Ghey should be in therapy and talking to trans people instead of letting a bunch of knuckle dragging fascists lead her grief around by the nose for political profit.

Read this thread. Please. As someone who has done research with queer kids on social media experiences I am BEGGING you to understand just how much Esther Ghey is pissing on her daughter's memory. For every young queer person harmed by social media there are HUNDREDS who call it their only lifeline.
Esther Ghey: "It was just that constant pressure of social media and wanting to get those likes. One of the hardest things was learning about what Brianna was accessing online that was encouraging her to self-harm and develop an eating disorder.”

Did 'the pressure of social media' stab Brianna Ghey
Most of us have pathologically useless parents who don't care to learn about protecting us properly, but this dogshit really takes the cake.

Seeing Labour supporters saying they just need to ditch Starmer to fix Labour. Have they not looked at the front bench? The policies? The gleeful transphobic & anti-migrant rhetoric?

Starmer is a symptom of the rot, not the cause. People who consider themselves progressives must move on from Labour

I think for me the most compelling answer for "why fund basic research?" (and the one most relevant to the people doing the work) is that humans are curious and finding stuff out makes us happy and fulfilled. Science is a thing humans like. Life would be more dull and sad if we didn't do it.
