the thing i don't get about this is that sure, you're some groyper who thinks the posters look cool. but, like, you must know that the nazis lost, and they didn't just lose, they lost to the people they *deemed inferior*: a polyglot nation of shopkeepers on one front & russian peasants on the other
Oh look, ICE is copying literal Nazi recruiting propaganda again. The poster on the right is for the Volkssturm, the Nazi militia of older men and boys established during the final months of World War II.

the one thing we don't want to turn this discourse into is an attack on smart, funny guys who were kinda awkward and lost their virginity late because the prospect of revealing themselves and facing rejection was terrifying even if it worked out in the end and they have been good on podcasts

how many young families should charlottesville turn away so that an 80 year old millionaire can preserve their peace and quiet? how many businesses should close and how many vacant storefronts should we have so that we can remain a quaint little college town?

The United States Is About to Embark on a Terrifying Experiment in Mass Statelessness
This scenario, until recently, might have read like a dystopian projection. But after the court’s decision on Friday, it is no longer hypothetical.

The reason the conservative intelligentsia has spent decades pretending that societal shifts in cultural attitudes are the same as state coercion is to justify the use of state coercion against the elements of society they disapprove of.
Here's one of the many clarifying passages in the White House (notionally GSA) letter. It demands Harvard set up a system of political commissars who will enforce hiring and admissions set asides for MAGA luminaries and high school red hats.

My latest with @kylebazgo.bsky.social for @dailydot.com identifies the likely operator of the anonymous racist account as Geoffrey Martin, a Canadian.

The account, followed by JD Vance, previously boasted of being a white supremacist.

DEI is when a woman or non-white person who is qualified for a job receives that job. The meritocracy is when a 19 year old gets to run the United States government because he posted the dankest memes
Yes totally cool that a 19-year-old who called his deleted LinkedIn "Big Balls," where he lists his experience working as a camp counselor can access the entire US federal payment system without anyone looking into his background, for instance, his Russian national close relatives or anything else

This is the stuff I'm a doomer about. Real journalism takes time - even a quick, original 700-word story requires a lot of legwork, relationships, etc.

It can never compete with instant slop, or accounts that just plagiarize news for free with more sensationalistic (and wrong) framing.
"Journalism...is built on the economics of attention"

Facts are boring. Conspiracy theories are exhilarating. Besides, fact checks are happening in spaces where the lie consumers aren't. No Fox News, OAN, Newsmax, NY Post, WSJ oped consumer is reading Politifact or Kessler. JFK is alive, after all.
I wrote about facts v. belief and belonging as the real crisis here:

Kavanaugh also brings up "detransitioners," people who "regret" their decision to transition genders. Like Alito, he cites European countries that are "pulling back" from gender-affirming care for minors, saying it's a "yellow light" or "red light" for the court that Europe is "pumping the brakes."
