Generative "AI" is Evil. Not in a metaphysical "imitation of mankind's sacred gifts" way.
In the way it causes very real harm in environmental damage and steals people's work to make them compete with a poor facsimile of it,
and then makes you complicit in this harm.
You don't have to, you can stop.

i think what gets overlooked is that part of the humor and charm of edits like these is that you're perfectly aware that someone sat down and spent their own time making it. they chose to do something cool or silly or stupid or genius, regardless of the results

that human element elevates the work
Who needs AI when we had stuff like this? I’ll take photoshop edits over the slop any day

Just watched the new Knives Out and I think it's really important you know that the scene in the Seminary's Gym is filmed in the same place Rick Astley filmed the music video for Never Gonna Give You Up.

I saw the window tracery and immediately made my friends pause the film so I could tell them.

The BBC currently can't be bothered to put together a Christmastime lineup that doesn't have Would I Lie to You starring a sex pest as a load bearing component, so I'm not sure what you expect me to do

Tbf if the BBC refused to show the new David Walliams panel show appearance just because they were aware of his behaviour, they would have to cancel an awful lot of the Christmas lineup.

Reminder: The Guardian has a "strategic partnership" with the AI oligarchs. So don't be surprised positive stories about AI will be relentlessly pushed as financial news about the techbros get worse and worse.

It is 100% true that replacing junior developers with AI will mean no more senior developers coming up, but equally, "don't worry, companies will train the next generation of developers in the hope of getting a few years of very cheap labour out of them" wasn't a particularly good system either

The problem is that those negative outcomes are serious enough that we should not be encouraging widespread gAI adoption in education; we have pastoral responsibilities to our students to stop.
Why can’t we make decisions from a space of caution rather than one of frenzied tech FOMO?
The current (very early!) literature on the cognitive effects and learning outcomes of using GenAI is mixed. There are headline negative ones but also positive ones. If one wants to appeal to the literature in this state you need to provide a thesis on why it is mixed.

"Academics literally cannot make genAI go away" we also can't make underage drinking go away and we're not advocating for installing bar carts in every classroom.

this is just basic psychological self defense.

ads - not all ads, but many ads - want to make you FEEL BAD.

they want to create in you a feeling of loss, a feeling of absence, that they can promise to fill with their product.

don’t let them! turn that shit off the moment it comes on.

My standard response is "tell me, in specific detail, how exactly I'll be 'left behind,'" and to date not a single techbro has ever answered the question. "You'll be left behind" is a statement of religious faith, not business fact, and should be treated as such.
So the “figure out how to use it lest you be left behind” replies about ‘AI’ that have been popping up here strike me as inauthentic but also kind of funny because they grant the point that rather than an automation panacea these technologies are quite difficult to figure out how to use effectively
