On Itch.io Creator's day, a reminder that I have two collections available. Matcha and Birds (抹茶と鳥方) is a collection of poetry I wrote in Japanese in traditional forms, such as haiku and tanka, and the accompanying English translations. #haiku #tanka #poetry

What does it mean that a work of art has "stood the test of time"?

It mostly means people still like it, for the reasons they originally liked it.

Why does the Suck Fairy exist?

Because tastes change, but also, whole modes of storytelling change.

Hi! Just a quick note to say my novel Lessons in Magic and Disaster was just named one of 2025’s best SFF novels by Kirkus Reviews. And this fantastical...

I accidentally snuck up on five mourning doves just now, so here is my favorite poem I've written with a dove in it.

僕は先ほどにナゲキバトに五羽たまた忍び寄った、だからここはハトの中の収録を僕が書いてある一番好きな詩だよ:

ショパン聞く雨降っているハトは鳴く

Shopan kiku
Ame futte iru
Hato wa naku

I listen to Chopin
It's raining
A dove sings

Always walk away from bullshit.
This is at least the fourth story I've seen of an author having to exchange multiple emails (over 20) with this publisher to get the contract language to not be rights grabby and it's one of three where the writer walked away.

I appreciate the effort and transparency but I will also say-
On August 12, 1971, 16-year-old me mailed the first story I ever wrote off on its first submission to my dream market, F&SF. My tale was quickly rejected. On July 17th, 2025, I finally sold a story to that magazine. Here's why I felt I had to withdraw that story. www.scottedelman.com/wordpress/20...

My takeaway from every new Epstein revelation is that some powerful people victimized many powerless young women, many more knew, some actively enabled it--and we're still being told that MeToo and accountability for sexual violence have gone too far

If you come to the event, I will have a few copies of my chapbook, Matcha and Birds, with me available for sale. This may be the last opportunity to buy physical copies of my chapbook without paying for it to be shipped. My print run is nearly sold out, and I don't intend to order a second run.

I think a lot about the story Carl Reiner told: he’d have been a sewing machine repairman if not for a free WPA drama class. That led to other theater work, to Sid Caesar, to Mel Brooks, and all the rest. All because of one free class paid for by a government that felt the arts were worth teaching.
you ever think about the works progress administration? I sure do. I wish that was a thing now. I would be so glad to contribute my labor to like. A random ass local bridge

UNTIL IT’S DONE, Ep. 4: Sylvia Rivera

In the 1970s, queer New Yorkers had been pushed to the margins of NYC. Our trans neighbors faced immense cruelty. But in Sylvia Rivera, they found a champion.

As we combat Trump’s politics of darkness, her legacy can light the path forward.
