To the extent my country is exceptional it is because we are a country of all people and none. The world made manifest. A nation of nations. A people united in truly radical ideas of freedom, equality, and justice for all. Any attempt to undo this is treason and also seeks to make us ordinary.

"The Bureau of Labor Statistics has reported that gambling was the second-highest service-sector industry for GDP growth between 2019 and 2024, behind only software publishing."

Jesus Christ.
Very annoyed at the people who decided to open the floodgates to online sports betting, it is absolutely a scourge. Great piece from Gabrielle Gurley on people spending hours a day on these predatory apps.
The Scourge of Online Sports Betting - The American Prospect
States and leagues must face up to the damage from app-based gambling for the next generation of bettors, most of them young men.

Libertarianism yielded some keen insights about what we're going through while libertarians largely failed to meet, or even enabled, the current moment. It will be really interesting to see how this all shakes out in the post Trump realignment.
I feel like I'm losing my goddamnned mind.

Reason fired @shikhadalmia.bsky.social for being too anti-Trump.

ah dammit, I KNEW I was forgetting something
“The new government forgot they were supposed to have ideas about governing” strikes me as a fairly major drawback that reflects quite badly on a lot of people.

This article is like saying “It’s time to admit airline food is subpar” when your 737‘s wings fell off and its engines caught fire. The problem isn’t even that you‘re wrong. It’s that now is *not* the time.

Last night further shrinking Daddy Yankee’s section when they write the history of Reggaeton is another laudatory side effect
I can take or leave Bad Bunny musically but it’s nice that the title for most famous reggaeton artist in the world is no longer held by a Republican

Puerto Rico hasn't had reliable power in a decade.

The grid sends occasional surges through the wires that fry appliances.

Electricity rates are among the highest in the entire U.S.

Heat waves are getting intense in the summer, and outages mean A/C is no guarantee for an aging population.

The good news is we're getting a Democratic Tea Party.

The bad news is we're getting a Democratic Tea Party.
Posters currently have the mandate of heaven, which is why Crockett may win the Texas senate primary despite basically not campaigning for it outside of social media sniping. I fear, however, that it is a *limited* mandate, and thus she probably loses in the general election

Indeed dictatorship is very good at *disgusing* problems, and then forbidding anyone from mentioning it.
I am struggling to think of any country this describes that doesn’t *also* let homeless people die on the street.
I've been to some countries where people live under military rule or autocracy. And without fail, one of the questions I get when they ask about life in the U.S. is whether it's true that Americans just let homeless people die on the street.

There are particularly American problems: homelessness is not one of them. It is more shameful in a rich country but it’s not unique.

It is true that in some places the police will, for instance, round you up and dump you on the steppe to die rather than disturb the look of the capital but I’m not sure this in an improvement.

During freezing temperatures in Port Arthur, Texas, a 61-year-old homeless man was found dead in his wheelchair outside a convenience store.

He was wearing a hospital gown and no shoes. Authorities say he had been released from a hospital the previous day.

This is a diseased society.

My life is this and people asking “what is an externality” and then immediately wanting a policy but not wanting to own the results of the policy

And then yelling at me that I’m not being political. Or too political

You can’t win
“I want *policy*”
“I DON’T WANT THESE EXTERNALITIES”
“That came with *policy*”
“No fuck you”

I think conservative art is so bad rn because a lot of the frictions and taboos that would keep artistically inclined people in right wing politics have eroded. Like you can go to Julliard now, your family won’t disown you if you don’t go into the military or banking first.

Trump abdicating on Covid was a national disaster and somehow by abdicating no one blamed him for it. Buck passing worked. Insanity
This pro-Trump nostalgia absolutely was confirmed over and over again by the Dems' own internal polling, in a truly horrifying way:

I'm not sure this comparison is all that useful considering how radically different the economics of TV are now from when TNG season 1 was produced. Like it just feels unfair to compare a show designed with (I assume) a season long plot to a hyper episodic TV show from what, north of 40 years now?
Also, keep in mind, by 5 eps into The Next Generation, we had Code of Honor, The Naked Then, The Last Outpost, as well as Encounter at Farpoint. Outside of the strong cast - it was a wildly weak start to a new Star Trek. Pound for pound, Starfleet Academy is better than TNG s1.
