To the extent my country is exceptional it is because we are a country of all people and none. The world made manifest. A nation of nations. A people united in truly radical ideas of freedom, equality, and justice for all. Any attempt to undo this is treason and also seeks to make us ordinary.

In his Haiti series, @mikeduncan.bsky.social mentions that the average lifespan for a slave in what is today Haiti was 7 years. It was cheaper to just work people to death and buy new people. Knowing that alone makes the Haitian Revolution all too logical. & that's before the specific punishments.
King Cotton gets a lot of focus in the US, understandably so. It's what most of the South was growing after all.

But Sugar Plantations devoured human lives as a scale that boggles the mind, even if said mind is well acquainted with the horrors of a Cotton Plantation.
Mortality rates were so high on sugar plantations during slavery that slaveholders used to coerce enslaved people working other crops like cotton with threats to sell them or their loved ones to sugar plantations.

That’s where the term “sold down the river” came from.

These 3 panels are what's really sticking with me after finishing WATCHMEN. Adrian, the world's smartest man, has finally achieved his plan. Yet he has doubts, he asks Jon for reassurance and Jon just laughs. The man who can see atoms move and galaxies die tells him nothing ever ends.

like 35 percent of the population gaining suffrage seems as good a point as any

It's hard to pin down the exact moment of shift but there is a very different understanding of how the government functions by the 1920s then there was in the 1880s.

I think you can argue for five: First Republic (before the 12th Amendment), Second Republic (up until the Civil War), Third Republic (Reconstruction Amendments), Fourth Republic (direct election of senators, women's suffrage, etc), Fifth Republic (post WWII).

I've certainly heard about the Civil War and Reconstruction Amendments as a 'second founding' but for whatever reason, maybe because he only served one term and left with Vietnam raging, LBJ's presidency is given the same treatment

I don't know if anyone has ever written a book arguing for the seperation of the United States into three or four sequential Republics, but you absolutely can -- and arguably should -- think of the country that way
I feel like the illusion of continuity through the civil war, reconstruction, jim crow, and the civil rights struggle is a weird kind of American exceptionalism. we are *not* in many deep and fundamental ways, the nation of the founders bsky.app/profile/amun...
We’re overdue for another Republic

realistically this is probably the end of our third republic, the first one worthy of being called a democracy. the question of whether we move into a fourth or not will define our lifetimes

at the moment that frankly includes our hybrid regime
If you were to run down a list of all the things distinctive about the United States in contrast to Old World Europe, most of it is stuff we instead have in common with Latin America. That's not some woke novelty, it's a deeply embedded centuries-old aspect of our culture and national identity.

Broadly, this admin is staffed with either total lickspittles or reactionary racists — they can’t actually fight on all fronts, they’re relying on capitulation. Its easy points to show you can and will fight, and the voting public wants conviction, not poll-tested triangulation on issues

“It’s not against the law to be male, and it shouldn’t be disqualifying to be Christian.”

This is 90% of the GOP platform: pretending that white Christian* men are society’s greatest victims.

*Evangelicals or weirdo converts to sects that don’t want them.
