I have been playing Civilization VII and, after an initially terrible reaction, have dug into it and found there's actually some really interesting and cool things masked by some....much less cool things.
Short version: design is fascinating and what I've been wanting!

"Yellow paint" criticism is not about "signposting yes/no" but it deals with the overreliance of copy/pasted "lazy" design patterns that disrupt suspension of disbelief and remind people that they are playing a video game like many other videogames
Being overburdened so you walk real slow, or your stamina to run drops hard, is not even remotely fun.

There are plenty of exceptions btw! Recent games like Kentucky Route Zero, Disco Elysium, and Indika. Earlier Grasshopper stuff like Killer7 and 25th Ward. SH2. All easy picks. I haven't played 1000xResist but I'm told it's great. Honestly, Nier Automata kinda gets there too in its better moments.
