you'd think the forced displacement of 10 million people from one of the oldest centres of civilisation in human history would get a little more news attention than beltway journalists writing essays on how Olivia Nuzzi is a genius because they want to bone her and you'd be wrong

seems to me that those democrats inclined not to fight perceive themselves as living through a somewhat ordinary cycle of presidential overreach and backlash and not something much more significant and dangerous

I feel like we have the opportunity to turn David Lynch's quote into this moment's "Keep Calm and Carry On" and it's a far better rallying cry too.

The job of a good message isn't to say what is popular. The job of a good message is to make popular what we need said.

MAGA and Madison Avenue have known and exploited this. But it also very much applies to campaigns for good.

the point of the ballroom obvs has nothing to do with aesthetics. it's to create an architectural structure to honor the patronage networks that currently dominate US politics. previous WH venues hosted maybe a couple of hundred people; this hosts nearly 1,000 rich donors.

Graduate seminar did a deep dive on Thomas Paine’s Common Sense yesterday. At the line, “in America the law is king,” they (14 students from 6 countries) burst out laughing. I've been doing this for 35 years and this is the first time that was a laugh line.

Becoming increasingly clear we’re gonna have to build a parallel infrastructure for all the media we really love. The reason all of this is happening under the color of law is hyperconsolidation, dissent being traded straight up for merger approval, or fear of harassment.

I think we are in a quantum superposition between democracy and competitive authoritarianism. The 2026 midterms will collapse the wave function: we'll look into the box and see whether the cat is dead or alive.

I know Democrats are overwhelmed (or rudderless, if you are less charitable) by the sheer volume of Trump authoritarian moves, but I’d like to see them unified behind specific goals like “RFK Jr is a threat to public health and needs to go.”

I'll say it a thousand times -- any account of the past that only celebrates the good parts of a nation without reckoning with the bad is not what we call "history"

It is propaganda, pure and simple.
You can't teach U.S. history without "divisive" narratives. Slavery wasn't "unifying." The Japanese incarceration wasn't "unifying." The anti-immigrant Operation Wetback (real name) wasn't "unifying."
It's history's job to tell the truth, not cover up past racism to pave the way for future racism.

“How does the computer know something happened if no one tells the computer about it” is the easy-reader way to explain why we still need human reporters and data-collectors

And I also find it genuinely alarming that even some people on this website don’t seem to grasp this
I firmly believe that if you’d said to someone in 2015 that in 10 years, “a lot of people will believe there’s no need for human field reporters because they think that entirely online-based AI chat bots can replace them”, they’d have called you insane.

This thread is a) spot-on; b) part of why we're where we are now, in the clean energy space.

(semi-related, I genuinely want to eat the windfarm seaweed snacks.)
Not at all a coincidence that this type of clean-energy comms - which presents a positive case in forceful terms rather than trying to dance around the issue - is coming almost exclusively from non-US firms. The comparison tells us a lot about why the IRA failed. More below:

This entire thread. 100 percent.
🧵 In the last decade, reactionary centrists convinced the US billionaire class that young people -- students, political staffers, their own employees -- have gotten unacceptably uppity & woke. The entire billionaire class, including purported Democrats, eagerly accepted this story.

This. These people assume kids do WAY more listening to professors than they do. It’s not the classes. It’s the chill AF Iranian girl with the good weed hookup and the hot queer boy who is nicer to you than any of your friends back home that change your brain chemistry. It’s the possibilities.
