The subcategorization/tropefication of popular fiction has been very bad in general, both for authors and readers.
The death of browsing is part of the reason art is the way it is now. Our opinions are largely fed to us by algorithms. Spending a spare 15 minutes wandering around a bookstore or comic shop or video rental place was how you found stuff you wouldn't ordinarily pick up and thereby expanded your taste
Bookselling is like the most "people go to the store and buy what looks cool to them without a particular agenda" type business left, and your purchases have a huge influence on what is ordered, what is displayed, and what is recommended.

... 3) The Catholic Church is deeply concerned about polygamy and bigamy in countries with *very* poor gender equity rights, and there are a LOT more Catholics in those countries than in the US.

Sorry to rain on the Tumblr parade but the Church *should* take this position as a *global* Church

A friend who teaches theology shared with me a post about CS Lewis's Mere Christianity, which discusses foundational Christian logic across denominations. It reminded me of Dale's tweet below, and I wanted to share some thoughts here regarding modesty and respectability, which are often hot topics.

“Instead of having fire insurance, let’s just have everyone save the average they can expect to lose to fire.” The result would be that most people would never have any use for that savings while a handful of people would save way too little to cover their losses.

but again, opening up your training data is like putting your dirty laundry out and can bring an entire company down

Bizarrely, it may not actually be as bad as the dot com bubble. AI "only" accounts for 40% of the value in the stock market. The dot com bubble was 80%.

The big difference is that instead of Keynesian boosting, the current president will make Hoover's response look good.

Even westerners should know by now that Hindu/caste supremacists are every bit as virulent as white supremacists. They just don't have as much power (though they do have a significant amount of it), which is why they love kissing the asses of nazis higher up on the global hierarchy.
Once again a gentle reminder that brown women can be pretty right wing. Their minority status in the West does not stop that from happening. You don't need to reach for any other explanation.

In Opinion

Early in Zohran Mamdani’s mayoral campaign, “it was easy to assume that failure to learn his name reflected a failure to take him seriously,” John McWhorter writes. But “as a matter of pure linguistics, it would be surprising if people didn’t have trouble with the name Mamdani.”
Opinion | I Now Mispronounce You the Likely Next Mayor of New York City
A lot of people seem to trip over Zohran Mamdani’s name. The reason may not be as simple as it seems.

This is pretty accurate, especially in the imperial core, and most especially in the US.

The dominance of finance capital over industry has characterized capitalism to varying degrees since the late 19th century but it goes into overdrive circa 1980:

I know the stereotype is that college profs want everyone to learn their subject. Interestingly, if I had the power to reshape undergraduate requirements, I wouldn't make my subjects (various forms of bio) required.

I would make a substantial probability and statistics class required. For all.

This sort of stuff gets laughed at as impossibly naive and simple-minded - “Yes, yes, be nice to people who are different than you and who are struggling” - but then, as we can see it’s actually a pretty big ask, consistently through history
Again, the Bible is unambiguous about it.

Thus says the Lord of hosts: Render true judgments, show kindness and mercy to one another; do not oppress the widow, the orphan, the alien, or the poor; and do not devise evil in your hearts against one another.
