My mom knew some victims who didn't come forward until their abuser died. The threat that "they will kill daddy if you tell anyone" is very compelling even when it's a lie, as it was in Illinois at the time.
You have to ask what is more important to you: protecting children or looking tough.

As a child protection professional, I can tell you the death penalty is NOT an awesome solution to child sexual abuse. Most children are abused by family members; they will not report if their family members will die as a result.

I wish there was better criticism of Starfleet Academy because S1E06 was a disaster from a nitpicking standpoint. But none of the criticisms seemed to care about stuff like a secret weapon research center only having a single defensive ship nearby despite explicitly stating 5 were nearby.

There's a concept in business called the "trust thermocline". Basically, people will stay subscribed to a service for a while even after you piss them off making it shitty. Once you finally piss them off so much they leave, you can't get them back by undoing the last straw—or even all the straws.
Democratic party leaders know they have a large percentage of voters who will always vote for harm reduction and yet the harm is always increasing. Yes the Republican party has agency too, but telling leftists to shut up for fucking years has gotten Democrats to this current situation.
