A Reconciliation Ecologist's Testimony at a People's Hearing

Something I had the honor to speak last week, to an auditorium full of Indigenous, Black and Brown, really a rainbow of environmental justice activists in Greensboro, NC.

File under, however bad your day was today, it could have been worse.
Based on John Sinclair's journal, Dec 26, 1846 was the day starving members of the Donner Party chose "either to die, or preserve life by eating the bodies of the dead; slowly and reluctantly they adopted the latter alternative." t.co/L40lvPBopW

If their genius is not recognized after they come to the convention with their manuscript in hand, surely it must be because they are white and male. Couldn't be anything else. They will go and tell people this was their experience at the convention. They were excluded. Tale as old as time.

They have come to the convention hoping to "break in" and then find themselves -- shocker! -- a "nobody in the book world." Yeah no shit! We all are! I have gently told guys like this a million times that it takes most of us *years* of hard work but they do not believe that could be true for them. +

I'd believe this anecdote because I've met guys like this at conventions. People do ask (politely) about their work and they can't pitch it because what makes it special is that they are the specialest boy. They go to panels and hear queer and BIPOC writers talk about their work and think "ah ha". +

After Cyclone Ditwah, unusual sea-foam appeared on Sri Lanka’s north coast. Scientists say it’s a natural mix of storm turbulence and plankton compounds, not pollution—but floods flushed sediments, plastics and nutrients seaward, stressing reefs and raising risks of blooms and marine damage.
As Cyclone Ditwah battered land, Sri Lanka’s oceans absorbed a silent shock
COLOMBO — Cyclone Ditwah, which claimed around 650 lives and left at least 200 people missing, cast a heavy pall of gloom over Sri Lanka from the moment it entered the island’s skies Nov. 28. By Dec.…

my hot take of the day is, both the left and the right have Ls to take on the "living in CA" issue

no, rich people are NOT going to reduce their quality of life substantially to avoid taxes

no, densification alone will NOT make places everyone wants to move to magically become affordable
Billionaires are considering cutting or reducing their ties to California by the end of the year because of a proposed ballot measure that could tax the state’s wealthiest residents.
A Wealth Tax Floated in California Has Billionaires Thinking of Leaving
It’s uncertain whether the proposal will reach the statewide ballot in November, but some billionaires like Peter Thiel and Larry Page may be unwilling to take the risk.

Beneath Kilimanjaro, coexistence with wildlife is fragile. Daniel Ole Sambu spent years holding balance—coordinating predator compensation, supporting rangers, building trust across cultures. His death is felt, but practices he shaped endure.

Computer scientists* will (should!) know the name George Boole, but his daughters were interesting, too –

(*mulling over if I should add, and most computational biologists!)
Reading about Ethel #Voynich (1864-1960) today for some writing and wow, what a life! Her father George Boole developed the idea of Boolean Logic. Her mother Mary was the librarian at Queen's College London. Four sisters, all math geniuses.

Writing is so often finding the right words for ideas. But the ideas themselves? I’m usually finding them on walks, in the shower, while cooking, really doing anything where my brain can just be unbothered a while.

If you’re stuck for ideas, try unplugging a little. Maybe they’ll come.

An internet where a child can't throw a rock without hitting a chatbot, where *all the content* is slop.

Where it's made purposely impossible to talk to other humans, and consume media made by other humans.
Facebook literally made a chatbot months ago that sexted with children while pretending to be John Cena, and *then* made a chatbot with actually-written out specific policies on how to sext with children.

Meanwhile, the US and UK are going wild destroying the internet in terror of trans people.

Back when the internet was young people kept trying to make spaces for kids online. This kept running into the problem of them being full of the worst adults you can imagine, and some so awful they are beyond the capabilities of most decent people to imagine.
