A Reconciliation Ecologist's Testimony at a People's Hearing

Something I had the honor to speak last week, to an auditorium full of Indigenous, Black and Brown, really a rainbow of environmental justice activists in Greensboro, NC.

The entire "COVID secretly emerged much earlier" narrative is the perfect example of this. If the virus was around in June, why didn't it spark mass outbreaks?

To make this dumb gotcha work, you have to make up even deeper conspiracies where COVID was less deadly and less contagious. Why?

A hallmark of conspiracy thinking is citing contradictory evidence with no coherent narrative.

If COVID emerged in summer 2019, then it also nukes the lab leak theory. Their best evidence is a few Wuhan Lab researchers getting sick in Nov. If the virus was already circulating, then it's irrelevant

Lab leak truthers love to point out that "only" one-third to one-half of early cases were directly linked to the market but you know how many were linked to the lab?

Zero.

Plus if the virus had emerged in the summer there would have been *far* more than hundreds of cases by January.

Redfield is a Trump appointee and known crank. If COVID was circulating in summer of 2019, the entire timeline of the pandemic would be different. Chinese authorities were not "pushing the wet market narrative," they actively covered it up.

I don't remember exactly what it was Ryan Grim first did that raised the red flags for me a year or two ago but man my red-flag-meter has never had a false positive. It's like cancer survival rates where you have to give it a time limit but I'm thinking mine is around 5 years.

There are no words to adequately describe the evil here.

And let me add: I never encountered an LMS until I started teaching after grad school. Coincidentally, I never anticipated how much of my job would be providing tech support to students for the various apps and tools that I'm now required to use
I often think about this in terms of email. When I did my undergrad in the 90s, none of my profs used email. It just wasn't how they communicated with students and colleagues.

Now, my working day is filled with emails but I don't think I'm a better historian than my undergrad profs because of it.
Not surprising from a historical perspective, at all. "Labor saving" technology never actually reduces the amount of work that people are expected to do. It increases it. That's because A) work is fundamentally a social relationship and B) technological innovation creates new problems to be fixed

ICE is expanding at breakneck speed, by which I mean they’re breaking people’s necks and doing speed
NEW: ICE has a plan to lease offices across the US as part of a secret, months-long expansion campaign.

Today, @wired.com is publishing dozens of those locations. Many are near schools, medical offices, and places of worship.

Vital work from @leahfeiger.bsky.social that I'm proud to publish.
