Look, I don’t know how far these skeets reach (this one has done more numbers than I typically see here) but this cute little fella showed up to hitch a ride on my car today, as if to prove some point. Look at them leafy feet on this leaf-footed bug!

“Did you get the shot for the #BirdOfTheDay theme of #DucksOutOfWater? Can I go back into the water now? 🙄”

White-faced Whistling Duck holding its pose for my camera, also at the same park in São Paulo as yesterday’s Kiskadee
November 13, 2025 at 3:08 PM
How about a Great Kiskadee to greet you this morning showing off its #Yellow belly, sitting at the edge of a lake in São Paulo, pulling the camera’s focus away from the Purple Gallinule #Paddling through the water? How’s that for today’s #BirdOfTheDay theme?

So today’s #BirdOfTheDay theme is #BirdsOnTheGround.

Birds on the ground, did you say? Think you’re being funny do ya? Well watch me leave the ground, muthafucka!!

Reposting this quote from Kurt Vonnegut about Armistice Day with alt-text as I think about all the millions of humans killed by America’s veterans in all its imperial wars and miscellaneous military misadventures. The things a nation chooses to remember tells you a lot, right?

Jafar Panahi’s IT WAS JUST AN ACCIDENT is an astonishing film about resisting authoritarian regimes and the cycles of violence they can generate in ordinary people who yet show great moral courage. I wish there were more than 5 people watching it with me just now. It’s so so relevant to Americans rn

we're snailposting, post your snails

Here’s another fella I met during the same trip to my student’s field site in Puerto Rico: an endemic Parthena acutangula (per the Seek app from @inaturalist.bsky.social)

Happy publication day! And congratulations!! You deserve all the flowers for your work to organize and fight on behalf of the powerless, especially now.

Here’s a Desert Sunflower for you, seen growing out of the hard ground in Death Valley some years ago.

Nice! Allow me to show off my new sweater too that I wore for the first time today

Talk about a timely delivery in the mail: Just got my copy of the new book “Read this when things fall apart” edited by @mskellymhayes.bsky.social!

Finished 60 laps around the sun today, riding this beautiful blue marble, sharing it with so many beautiful, bizarre, wonderful relatives/fellow passengers. Like this Crowned Slug Moth caterpillar I met this past weekend on a wooded trail. Wishing everyone many moments of peace and connection.

“Just how many photos do you need to take of me?”
I was definitely #spotted by this Atlantic Black-throated Trogon in Brazil’s Parque Estudial Carlos Botelho a couple of summers ago. #BirdOfTheDay 🪶

My kids, like so many around the world, were inspired by Jane Goodall’s deep empathy for animals and the natural world. They were lucky to get to meet her once after one of her talks—she always stayed for hours greeting, autographing, being photographed with kids.

All I got was this lovely t-shirt.

Umm… I know the university could use more funding, but…

Should I be forwarding this to someone who actually deals with the university’s finances? Not sure how desperate we are yet…

Update: NC State vet did thoracocentesis to drain 60ml fluid from Talon’s pleural cavity. No wonder the poor lad was struggling so much! Brought him home in the evening and he’s doing much better since, more like his normal self. But he also crawled and sat in his carrier last night for comfort! 🥹

No fun to be back at the vet’s on a #caturday morning, but here we are. Talon is perkier & his fever is down but he appears to have more fluid in lungs, so they’re sending us off to a hospital to have the fluid drained, which should also help determine if it is an infection/cancer/something else.

Show me a picture on your phone that has your energy. Not a selfie.

Worried waiting in veterinary hospital this evening coz our golden boy Talon is sick. He was diagnosed with hyperthyroidism recently and had been improving with meds. He was lethargic all day, not eating, so brought him in to find he has a fever+heart murmur+maybe fluid in lungs… waiting on tests 🤞🏽

Once again, I am reminded of Eduardo Galeano’s words about where the culture of terror really starts.

Your last saved pic is your moral philosophy.

[huh?! And I happened to have just taken this screenshot from my own most recent writing. Uncanny timing. 😆]
