Tomorrow is the Fifth of November – but let’s forget Guy Fawkes and his actions against an arrogant Protestant king and instead look to our own history: the unlawful attack on Parihaka and, by extension, Māori sovereignty.

For context: Total cost of all reparations paid to Māori for land confiscations to date = $2.7 billion

Total cost of the economic lunacy of this government reinstating mortgage interest deductions to landlords = $2.9 billion (over 4 yrs), plus $760 million every single year thereafter

In 1976, African nations boycotted the Montreal Olympics because New Zealand stood with apartheid South Africa. Nearly 50 years on, that echo lingers and the stain remains far longer than we care to admit to ourselves.

Goldsmith is worried about sovereign risk from court recognition of tikanga Māori

But the real sovereign risk comes from a govt that has repeatedly meddled with the independence of courts and legal proceedings for cynical self-serving ideological reasons

Justice Minister Paul Goldsmith warns government prepared to remove tikanga Māori from court rulings
The minister claims New Zealand's "bespoke" legal system could discourage overseas investment.

I'm sensing a bit of a pattern here: government stops some big project with no plans for a replacement, finds out that it's going to cost them more in the long run for a worse result. Huh, imagine that.

Do we have to do this all the time?

beehive.govt.nz/release/20-mil…

It’s not new funding. “the initiative will be funded from Health New Zealand’s baseline”. So it’s actually being cut from somewhere else.

We already underfunded the health system at the Budget. This is a further cut

Simeon Brown is forcing Health NZ to sign 10 year contracts with private hospitals - meaning it will be very difficult for a future government to back out of the contracts. But the evidence is clear, privatised healthcare costs more and delivers worse outcomes: www.rnz.co.nz/news/on-the-...
NZ’s shift to more private healthcare will likely raise costs and reduce quality: what the evidence tells us
Analysis: Studies show public healthcare is more likely to lead to better health outcomes, and diverting public funds to private healthcare erodes the quality of public care.

Axing the power will improve taxpayer privacy but weaken the quality of IRD policy advice.
