reminder that "check a book" also doesn't work now since AI has been ruining those for years, also

i'm fully in favor of seeing openAI get obliterated, because they're a bad business, run badly, but i feel like we can accomplish this without giving into satanic panic 2026. heavy metal didn't turn people into murderers in the 80s, video games didn't do it in the 00s, and chatGPT isn't doing it now

So New Zealand’s statement on an illegal attack on another country was made on an American platform overrun by bots, by the Foreign Minister, not the Prime Minister, who was presumably briefed before or just after the attack and remains silent hours later… and there’s still no offical press release?

If there’s not an independent investigation into how this all went down and how poorly it was handled that’ll be a new low for this current government
"[ManageMyHealth's] ignorance of our emails and messages, along with their failure to acknowledge users or explain exactly what happened, is the main issue." 👀

I was wondering why this is the lowest ransom demand I've ever seen... Also, that opening graf is napalm.

Their stated reason for lowering the deadline is frustration with ManageMyHealth's response to their messages. They also cite the relatively fast public acknowledgement of the breach as another reason.

My tramping adventures often mean dehydrated meals are the least suffering but I’m currently planning to pack home made pizza, instant ramen with peanut butter, and a home made bagel and some eggs for breakfast for a more chill pending adventure

A 48 hour deadline might well mean members of the public find out there data is in it via the breach rather than an individual notificsation from the company as theirs was going to be following confirmation of forensics and missions with PHOs and GPS

The deep irony of Christopher "Mr Business" Luxon not being available to do his job, presumably because he's on holiday and thinks Winston should do it because he's Foreign Minister
Having literally worked as a ministerial press secretary over the holiday shutdown before: there is no excuse for this, whoever's on duty has all the emergency/personal phone numbers they need to get the right people online to issue a prompt response to an international incident of this enormity
We (RNZ) put in a bid 3 hours ago and haven't heard back

What's hilarious is the media is still doing the "but he was a bad man, but he was a socialist, but he oversaw economic ruin, but the elections weren't fair" routine when the Trump admin has already admitted it's simply about the oil. We don't have to pretend anymore guys! This isn't 2003!
there’s no nz exceptionalism around this kind of western imperialism, nz media and politicians are already primed and willing to fall into line. nz outlets have almost immediately been regurgitating the same pro regime change propaganda people are decrying when they see NYT and WAPO publishing it
