A few months ago, ICE hired me

I didn't sign and submit any paperwork. I almost certainly failed the drug test. I'm real outspoken about my opposition to the Trump administration, and I am extremely googlable

And yet, there it was, in plain English. "Welcome to ICE!"

My latest for Slate
You’ve Heard About Who ICE Is Recruiting. The Truth Is Far Worse. I’m the Proof.
What happens when you do minimal screening before hiring agents, arming them, and sending them into the streets? We're all finding out.

I do think there's a larger conversation to be had about how bad training is casual in law enforcement abuse instances. Recognizing and responding appropriately to *actual* danger is a learned behavior that is not normal or natural, but training it much harder than just buying more gucci gear
the thing about “ICE needs training” is that Jonathan Ross was a ten year DHS vet and a firearms instructor

he’s the kind of guy they get training from

the whole institution is rotten, throw it out
Democrats officially going all in on the mealy mouthed “ICE needs training” narrative.

No. ABOLISH ICE.

More people should read Barbara Walter's How Civil Wars Start because the mechanics behind this graph are actually pretty cool and (to me, at least) the book generally is a great guiding text in our Current Year
Guys in case you thought foreign policy was somehow less stupid before Trump this was the book and theory that all the country's intellectuals were really into in the mid 00's

It must honestly be suck to be a prominent young person. You still basically have your teenage brain and your teenage-brain takes will now haunt you forever. You can't even delete your cringe as you grow up
Reminder that Bazelon is fresh out of undergrad, his stat knowledge is questionable, and his qualifications are an internship with Matty's blog that he might have gotten because his mom is a well known journalist.
this is just a wild thing to tweet a week after democrats won a statewide in Georgia by 20 points. completely divorced from the current electoral environment

Fuck you, you yellow-bellied freak. Spines like weak jello, the lot of you.
As this vote moves to the House, I stand with Democratic leadership as they refuse to rubber stamp the full-scale Republican assault on Americans’ health care and I am proud of the majority of Senate Democrats who opposed this vote.

I missed fall planting season because within a week of it no longer being 90 degrees, it was freezing
It takes 30 days to grow a radish. Also 2/3 of the country is already in or entering winter.
On Threads, the usual suspects are telling ppl about to lose SNAP benefits to just start a garden. As a gardener, I had to laugh. You need at LEAST an acre of land to feed a family of 4. Start-up costs are enormous. But yes, subsistence farming on the balcony of your rental apartment is the answer

Most pagans I know are the most *militantly* anti-Nazi people I've ever met. It can be really weird to see runes next to trans flags and Iron Front arrows!!

Normie Grandma protest discourse is the best discourse
Showing up to No Kings with a sign reading “monarchy is an affront to human dignity but, when incorporated into a liberal democratic system, may nevertheless be a useful safety valve for nationalist and/or authoritarian impulses” and then getting clobbered by a Buttigieg-supporting grandmother
Incidentally, I’ve been chafing a bit at the “No Kings” thing, because there are loads of monarchies that have more limits on executive power than the US does, but it has the great advantage that it makes Americans who want to oppose it sound, well, unamerican….

What The Hell Is Going On, a thread:

I’ve seen some thinkpieces and posts about Portland protests that fail to understand the long-term hyperspecificity of Portland culture/humor, and frame it as a sort of shitposting meme-pilled ironic thing. Which is wrong.

So I’m gonna give you my breakdown.
