I actually think the latter isn't true. It's terrible intuitions about voters and also not understanding the admin and current events.

If you remember that the point of every Trump foreign policy idea is to generate social media content rather than actually accomplish anything tangible then it all makes a lot more sense.
What is just crazy about this, aside from the need for this statement at all, is that Greenland already IS in the US sphere of influence. It's far cheaper for the US, in material, security, and reputational terms, to have Denmark continue administering Greenland and work within NATO on security.

I mean this isn't true anyways, but what do you expect from voter facing statements in an election year when we are where we are because marginal voters cared mostly about their wallets.
