Yes, yes, yes.
As a conservative of that era, I 100% agree and it drives me crazy. MAGA is extremely post-modern, in all the bad ways we described.
Very bleakly funny that circa-2012-2015 conservatives have been totally vindicated in their arguments against the postmodern turn in parts of academia, the embrace of ‘ways of knowing’, rejection of bureaucratic rationality, etc.…because they embraced all those things and it was indeed a disaster

Trump says we need to go after drug cartels.

Meanwhile, he disbanded a DOJ task force that took them on.

And he pardoned a former Honduran president convicted of drug trafficking.

Trump doesn't care about drugs — he wants to be able to declare war on anyone he labels an enemy.

It's a power grab.

The New York Times investigated 346 people who donated at least $250,000 to Trump and found that more than half of them (197) have received pardons, jobs, government contracts, special treatment, or favors.

Well into his second term, the president and his allies have continued aggressively raising money. Many donors have interests before his administration, The Times found.

Provocative essay. Will be interesting to revisit it in a few years.

It seems to have the same tone as the giddy predictions from the nuclear crowd in the 1950s (“too cheap to meter”).
It was never conceived this way, but most of the idealized consequences of "solarpunk" can be a direct consequence of this line going down. Radically decentralized greened desert communities can be delivered directly by market forces. caseyhandmer.wordpress.com/2025/12/08/e...

In other words: I was making money shoveling conspiracy bullshit without having any facts and conning my audience to make a buck. After I leave the FBI, I will get back to that.

Think much of the over-parenting we despise stems from the early on fear of the driver.
If parents weren't terrified of our streets kids would have so much more freedom and independence which might get them comfortable with their children's ability to navigate the world without them.

The problem is not the pardon power. The problem is us. We weren't supposed to elect a crook as POTUS. If we did, the people we elected in Congress are supposed to do something about it. We're idiots, so we've elected crooks & cowards all the way up the line.

The problem is us. We need to fix us.
Giving the president the pardon power was a mistake. The most corrupt president in American history is conducting a jailbreak for his fellow criminals.

I feel seen
I'm sure some conservatives still believe in democracy, equality, fair dealing, and the rule of law. They're just Dems at this point. We hear their voices asking Dems to move right every day. They see that as more viable than asking the GOP to uphold those ideals.
