I have had several NIH grants as a PI. I've never had much more than email contact with a PO. They can be super helpful for understanding how the IC thinks about or prioritizes different kinds of science. So totally worth it to talk to for advice.
But it's not, IME, some shady insider cabal.
But it's not, IME, some shady insider cabal.
Is it just me, or is the grant awards process super shady?
eg., I once spoke with an academic who was really good at getting grants.
Their advice?
"Build a personal relationship with grant officers."
This was not the only time I've heard some version of this.
It seems super shady.

SEATTLE!!!
We’ve now taken the lead by 91 votes! 🤯 This thing is certainly not over! Over 1,000 ballots have been challenged, so if you haven’t tracked your ballot yet get on it! Our trusty volunteers have been working hard to "cure" ballots so they count! We're so close!

This Seattle mayoral race is wild. The progressive challenger @wilsonforseattle.bsky.social has only just now pulled ahead of the current mayor, with 7,000 votes left to count.
Incredible , and go Katie go!

Katie Wilson won 55.57% of today's ballot drop, giving her a 91 vote lead over incumbent Bruce Harrell out of 272,041 ballots tallied so far in Seattle's mayoral race. So... she likely wins.

Senate Dems have a winning hand and are folding. Rank and file Dem voters are going to need to rise up against and fire their leaders over this.
From what I have seen so far this does not seem like a good deal:

“People read Foucault,” ... David Brooks once wrote, ... “and develop an alienated view of the world.” God, did I love this. An “alienated view of the world”! Not by, like, trying to pay rent or having an insurance claim denied—no, no, it was probably the Foucault you read in 2003.
What an amazing essay from the former chair of Africana Studies at Bowdoin. I'll share a few sections in the reply but seriously, read the whole thing. It's all insightful and beautifully written.

Don't test interactions separately by group; it's not a direct test of your interaction hypothesis AND your test is underpowered in each group.
Remember, in OLS the interaction coefficient X*M IS how the slope of X/M changes for a 1 unit change in M/X.

This is important. People still do this a lot, and it ends up being a back-door method of inferring an interaction (e.g., “effect was significant in women but not men”)
“changes in statistical significance are often not themselves statistically significant. … even large changes in significance levels can correspond to small, nonsignificant changes in the underlying quantities.”

He said that the agents would throw food at them to eat. The agents threatened to withhold food for a week and to beat him up if he didn't sign deportation papers. He said he saw others refuse and get beaten/receive no food. He signed because he was afraid.

The question "Why does this say male/female?" means that any trans person now has to explain their entire mental health and medical history to domestic or foreign government officials.
This is de facto differential treatment that no other citizen has to face.

Reminder, do not only work on #NIHGrant study section reviews with the online forms. Keep a document with your critiques. Cancelled meetings are removed from IAR view and potentially are unrecoverably scrubbed.
Is anyone a fan of the new online reviews for NIH study section?
I just spent 1hr writing a review online & then the website crashed. It did not autosave anything, I lost all of that work!!!
