Hard agree on this. The solution involves making a wide variety of treatment and housing options readily available, so when people are ready, they can consent to getting help.
The perception is that involuntary care will sweep the streets clean, getting people into treatment and rebuilding contributing members of society.

The reality is that people are likely to be disappointed as we get a classic example of overpromise and underdeliver. Shane Mills writes. #vanpoli

While it’s good news that Bob Ferguson now supports an income tax, his plan would delay it to 2029. And he proposes a lot of austerity before that, including huge cuts to public education. That’s bad policy and bad politics.

More people have died in ICE detention in 2025 than any year since 2004.

The government has a legal and moral obligation to provide people in its custody with medical care and livable conditions.
Four ICE detainee deaths in four days spark alarm as arrests grow
At least 30 detainees have died in 2025, prompting concerns about deteriorating conditions at facilities even as the agency has received an infusion of cash from Congress.

It’s the “season of love and giving”…but this year, doesn’t it seem more like a “season of fear and taking”? Like many of you, I’ve been saddened by the human impact of draconian government budget cuts and how angry many housed Americans are at unhoused Americans.

I just had a look at ICE's media website about deaths in custody nationwide and the way they label everyone who's died in those press materials as an "illegal alien" is gross and dehumanizing.
December 20, 2025 at 9:37 PM
Oh.
Today I received FOUR death notifications for people in ICE custody. That's 30 deaths since Trump took office. It's appalling & unacceptable.

ICE is required—by law—to ensure detainees are safe & their basic needs are met. It's clear this isn't the case. We NEED answers.
