Yep, the comparison of the Frelard area before and after really does cement why we need Ballard Link...but also why we could do buses tomorrow if we chose to.

For me the most glaring hole is Fremont. It’s very dense (and has gotten denser) and we’ve put in a ton of capital money to improve the 40 but it still doesn’t have an all day frequent bus

What’s increíble about this is Mark is one of the most careful and respectful advocates and shows up in spaces so tactfully and with data and research you’d expect from a professional consultant. This is such a frustrating story. Hopeful things will change w/ SDOT culture generally!
For 3 years (2018-21), I lobbied SDOT for traffic signals that favored pedestrians—doing these dog and pony shows on Mercer to demonstrate the problems. But as I was gaining traction, Adiam Emery shut me out of the conversation because I was "just an advocate" and didn't have an official role. 🧵

And four, to encourage you to show up, stick with it, and adapt. Most advocacy efforts take years. Most of mine fail completely. I wish it was as easy as getting mad, calling the city, and then watching SDOT crews arrive the next day with a cement mixer.

Three, to underscore the importance of doing this with friends. I’m not a great organizer so I work solo or in small groups but you need friends and @sngreenways.bsky.social is a ready-made group of like-minded co-conspirators.

Two, just to celebrate our new mayor @wilsonforseattle.bsky.social who truly respects advocates and wants to be pushed. Our role as advocates now is more relevant than ever.

I’m sharing this story for four reasons. One, to encourage you to advocate for the things important to you whether you have an official role, a title, a paid gig or not. Social change happens when people push from the outside.

Anyway, now an advocate is mayor (maybe you already spotted her in this photo) and Adiam Emery is shut out of the conversation.

Ultimately, we got better policies‼️ but that experience has stuck with me. "...just an advocate."

To elbow me out, Adiam, who was head of the Transportation Operations Division of SDOT at the time, formed the Policy and Operations Advisory Group (POAG) with representation from modal boards and other official groups. Fortunately, I had friends on POAG and I continued to work behind the scenes.

Call your Reps and Senators!
Capitol Hill switchboard:
(202) 224-3121
Candid answer - as someone who handled constituent affairs calls for years - while they’re not checking the phone right now, the urgency of the moment is important.

Show them you care enough to make the weekend call, and be counted that way. Staffers will clock and report this upstream.
Is there actually a benefit to leaving a VM now vs getting a staffer on Monday? Can do both but just curious
