As someone who follows the AI debate(s) closely, though only uses it here and there, and only at work, it is pretty obvious now that the anti-AI side has lost.

By which I specifically mean folks like Ed Zitron and Gary Marcus who have argued that the capabilities will fall short of expectations.

People aren’t considering that Trump is a dumb guy and bad businessman who fundamentally doesn’t know what he’s doing.

Finally watched One Battle After Another and can offer it this high praise: it felt like a lean, run of the mill 70’s masterpiece like The Conversation, Dog Day Afternoon, or The Taking of Pelham One Two Three

so, joking aside, I do really dislike this dynamic

one of the reasons I very rarely get in fights On Here (aside from finding it personally upsetting) is that I believe that most people on the left-liberal spectrum have their hearts in the right place and prefer to direct my ire at people who don't
I see it’s that time of the month again

Trump in a single gaggle on Air Force One just threatened:

-- a second strike against Venezuela
-- Cuba
-- Mexico
-- Colombia
-- Iran
-- Greenland (which in turn would be an attack on the EU and Denmark)

We threw away a century of alliances for absolutely no reason. It’s crazy but it happened. bsky.app/profile/crai...
Europe has been stubbornly slow in coming to grips with the fact that the United States is no longer an ally.

They're no longer in a geostrategic alliance with an allied government, they're in a transactional business relationship with a mafia state.
DENMARK INTELLIGENCE REPORT:

“.. The United States uses economic power, including threats of high tariffs, to enforce its will, and no longer rules out the use of military force, even against allies.”

Trump can effectively disband NATO with one neat trick.
The Prime Minister of Denmark Mette Frederiksen to the United States:

“The Kingdom of Denmark, and thus Greenland, is a member of NATO and is therefore covered by the Alliance’s collective security guarantee.” I “strongly urge the United States to cease its threats.”

Now that the U.S. has triggered an "international armed conflict," Venezuelan nationals residing in the USA are "protected persons" under Geneva Convention IV.

Several significant legal implications flow from that. ...

In this thread, I highlight 3 items you may not see covered in same way, if at all, elsewhere.

International Law and the U.S. Military and Law Enforcement Operations in Venezuela

All of this is nauseating and profoundly embarrassing. Americans who can watch this without feeling shame and horror are inhabiting an alien moral universe I do not understand.
NBC News: “How soon will elections be held in Venezuela? Within 30 days?”

Rubio: “Elections? I think it is premature at this point.”

The US is going to be there for the long haul.

Glem is a prime example of someone who decided that nothing dovish Biden did mattered so long as Biden was still marginally dedicated to containing Russian expansionism - either a very strange priority indeed or a blindingly obvious one, depending
Tankies and fascists often like to unite and have each other’s backs.

Glenn Greenwald promoting Trump and lying about him being anti-war in 2023 and 2024 is a great example of this

There’s no event too extraordinary for corporate media to change their approach.
absolutely bizarre to see a violent, rogue american regime, which is threatening military attacks on a bunch of major trading partners and close allies, and openly fantasizing about hitler-style wars of territorial conquest, covered in the tone of horse-race political commentary

Yes, China was buying a lot of Venezuela's crude exports, mainly for financial reasons (in-kind repayment of development loans). Yes, China has strategic concerns securing its oil supply lines in event of conflict with US, but Venezuela is a tiny drop in that bucket and far from an important factor.
