Washington State leaders need to intervene here.
ICE detain father shopping on Christmas Eve—then steal his family's groceries.

Then 3 agents divvy up his paid for food—taking what they want for themselves.

"Can I just get the wife's number to call and let her know?" woman asks.

"No, guess he should've complied," agent says.

This is the way. Shame these people for as long as they live.
ICE agent recognized out Christmas shopping—throws tantrum when citizens profile him.

"We're trying to prevent you from kidnapping our neighbors," they say.

"I'm not doing anything but walking, leave me alone!" he yells.

"Not right now you're not—but the past 5 days you have."

Really not a fan of this “let’s go back to the 20th century when anyone who was ‘different’ was an object of ridicule and we enforced conformity to the norm” trend.

This cemetery defaulted on a loan and was in receivership. It probably can’t stay open without being able to sell this unused and empty corner for housing. But the NIMBYs are going off anyway.

This hopefully is a sign that Seattle’s Chamber of Commerce is realizing they need to pivot and become more progressive, rather than fighting what Seattle voters want.

Ferguson's budget would divert $569 million in CCA dollars to fund the Working Families Tax Cut, which had been funded via the state general fund. Climate advocates are already calling the move an "unprecedented sweep" of CCA revenue.

I want to ask the flipside question: what will it take for wealthy progressives to fund the infrastructure and entities needed to identify, support, and sustain emerging voices on *our* side of the aisle?
Anti-trans demagogue and fifth place swimmer Riley Gaines earned $470,000+ last year from a conservative non-profit.

Notably, $420k was incentive-based.

A neat little window into the way the transphobic grift is being compensated.

I wonder what the per-post rate is?

You can’t get to Snoqualmie Pass without a car. But what if we had a train that went there, like in the Alps? We used to!

Here’s more about the Snoqualmie ski train, and how we can provide transit service to the pass so people don’t have to drive to enjoy winter.

Words for Americans to live by 250 years later
Dec. 24, 1775: “Let me ask you Sir, when is the Time for brave Men to exert themselves in the Cause of Liberty and their Country, if this is not?” George Washington expresses his disappointment to Gen. Philip Schuyler after hearing that both he and Gen. Richard Montgomery are inclined to retire. 1/3

This is outright Nazi stuff, and Democrats in Congress aren’t doing enough to try and stop it.
WaPo reports that ICE is planning 7 massive human warehouses holding 5,000 to 10,000 people.

Recalls the acting ICE director 2015 statement that he wanted to see a “business”-oriented approach to deportations, “like [Amazon] Prime, but with human beings”.

Democrats are doing nothing to stop this. And honestly, most of us aren’t doing enough. I don’t know what the answer is. But we have to find it, and fast.
So I have the cover story in next month's TNR.

I interviewed the heads of police groups; immigration defense attorneys, ex-judges and ex-prosecutors; former DOJ and DHS officials, and the former head of Border Patrol.

They're all horrified at what we've seen, and they all fear what's coming.

That’s a good start! But we do also need to use resources from a Millionaire’s Tax to fund public schools and backfill federal safety net cuts.

I am glad we all can now discuss how we spend revenues from a Millionaire’s Tax, rather than argue about whether we should pass such a tax.
Our tax system is way too regressive.

Let’s use resources from a Millionaires’ Tax to provide tax credits for Washingtonians and make sure small business owners pay less in taxes.

Uh…wow.
Today I learned (in a conversation with @staterepjuliareed.bsky.social about her new bill, HB 2095) that in Washington a driver is currently presumed liable for a collision if they strike a bridge, but not if they strike and harm someone walking on a sidewalk.

While it’s good news that Bob Ferguson now supports an income tax, his plan would delay it to 2029. And he proposes a lot of austerity before that, including huge cuts to public education. That’s bad policy and bad politics.

By announcing his support for this tax idea today (it would not kick in til 2029), Ferguson was able to take away some attention from the fire his immediate supplemental budget proposal is taking from fellow Democrats and progressive groups for its mix of cuts and fund swipes.
