Hence the portrayal of those who are/were estranged from their parents (hi) as "dramatic, selfish, fashionable."

As Brooke puts it:

"If children can walk away from dysfunctional families, they can walk away from dysfunctional governments, churches, and leaders, too."

"I don't understand why humanistic education is important or necessary" - guy with Alcibiades in his username.

That is why you need it. Perhaps if you had approached with a more open mind, you might have gained more by it.
If you are providing me with an education that is low utility in the world then it’s a disservice. My composition class spent four weeks on poetry. I’m sorry, but that only would’ve been useful if I wanted to be a poet. I don’t need to know iambic pentameter in order to be a victim advocate.

Maybe this is a conversation we need every 10 yrs in a consumer-driven capitalist society. Purely transactional relationship is an inappropriate model for ed & for healthcare too. It’s also anathema to religion, despite the “prosperity gospel” charlatans. What makes us human isn’t measured in ROI.

It drives me to distraction that so many people who spend twelve hours a day demanding the Democrats do crimes without specifying which crimes they should do at root are mad that Robert's Rules of Order don't constrain people automatically.

Biden wasn’t even allowed to say the economy was doing well, even though it objectively was, because that was insensitive to anyone anywhere who was struggling.

But Republicans can go “oh, you can’t afford health care now, waaaaa cry more” and apparently that’s fine.

Its a tell that Ds are doing what centrist pundits have explicitly said they should do—center "kitchen table issues"—but theyre moving the goalposts to still give them grief anyways bc Ds arent doing the thing they *implicitly* want them to also do—throw trans ppl, minorities, & women under the bus
As long as these people disapprove and stay home, I'm happy

It's a panic response that has to be dressed up in better language. You have to balance the budget, I get that! But anything truly innovative is scary, and cutting things that the Chronicle tells you are unpopular and irrelevant is the least scary maneuver for admin.

congratulations to Rand Paul on inventing

*checks notes*

single payer healthcare
Rand Paul on his healthcare plan: "What if you could join Costco? Costco has 44m members and if one person negotiated for all 44 and they bought a group plan like Toyota or General Motors does, they would be the largest collective entity in the country. They would drive prices down by sheer might."

One of the opinions I could be inclined to support is "ban all business undergrad degrees"
every time i read about one of these college presidents promising to reinvent the liberal arts education i think of "marge v. the monorail"
Yes we all agree that this is the reason colleges are in trouble

there is no available evidence that donald trump understands what a tariff is, what a trade deficit is, and what the national debt is.
The way Trump talks about the problems he caused by unilaterally imposing tariffs is fairly insane, even by his standards.

POLITICO: You pardoned the former president of Honduras even though he was convicted in a massive intl drug trafficking scheme. How is that 0 tolerance on drug trafficking?

TRUMP: Well I don't know him and I know very little about him other than people said it was like an Obama-Biden type set up

honestly job training should be provided by the employer, the way it was from the 50s up til even the 80s. Outside of specialist professions like engineering and medicine -and in as much as ed should focus on work-skills- it ought to focus on generally applicable skills, which LA is all about.

The thing that bums me out about this is how much of the student loan debate centered around pushing for unilateral executive action on forgiveness rather than pushing for legislative change moving forward. Helping some people out of a burning building without doing anything to try to put it out.

Fondly remembering all the people who insisted this wasn't happening and mockingly said "number go up" about one of the best economic conditions for low income workers in decades. I still remember who you are!
yep. and particularly low income workers whose wages were rising faster than anyone else's and much faster than inflation. that's now reversed bsky.app/profile/mtsw...
But if you spent 2021 and 2022 whining about the prices of burrito taxis instead of celebrating the best ever job market for workers in the 21st century you should know that you were helping the bosses' little scheme. Scheme worked! Trump's back and people are now desperately holding onto their jobs
