It's a really shocking indication of just how much dumber conservatism has become.
2000s Republicans believed that Iraq was actually about [insert neocon apologetics], and that "we went to war for oil" is just something uninformed know-nothing liberal media celebs parrot.

2020s Republicans believe we went to war in Iraq for oil and racism and that that was good actually.

I generally try not to comment on Twitter but Isaac Chotiner is over there giving Semafor body blows right now and I just want to say I find it alarming that he's allowed to come for you without warning (asking for an interview)

My sense is that between ancient Greek culture, Russian military culture, and Western prison culture, there are some commonalities to this sort of situational male homosexuality that we have a hard time grasping through our typical framework for these things.
And the real "smart" question we asked was "so what does make you gay?"

And we got a wide variety of responses from "only the receptive partner is gay" (mathematically difficult to figure out how "nobody" could be gay in that case) to the Andrew-Tate-Esque "It's only gay if you love the man."

This is a great insight.
The key to buying on Amazon is to only look at the 4 star reviews. The 5 star reviews are frequently gamed and spammed, but the 4 stars are “I liked it but . . .” and usually have a lot of useful info about flaws. If something comes up repeatedly there, you know it’s an issue with it

when we did a thanksgiving in France one time we just got like 6 poulet roti/rotisserie chickens from the place down the block and it was roughly one million times better than a turkey. and I like turkey.
it is tired to the point of cliche to say if turkey was good, people would make it more than once a year. but it is understated that at least one American explodes every Thanksgiving in a brave attempt to make the main dish more palatable

Literally the reason Twitter sucks now is all these foreigners logged on willing to do racism for pennies on the dollar and undercut our home-grown American racists. We need to erect serious trade barriers to protect the integrity of our domestic racism industry and preserve racist jobs.

It remains insane to me that DOGE was treated at the time as an impressive shock and awe accomplishment - “you can’t deny he’s getting stuff done!” - and then instantly memory holed by the press once if became clear it was a total failure by every possible standard including Musk’s own
Difficult to overstate how profound a failure DOGE was. Spending in FY2025 was not only than in FY2024 – but higher than it was projected to be when Trump first took office.*

The little bit of spending DOGE cut has already killed hundreds of thousands and will eventually lead to millions of deaths.
Bye bye, “DOGE”.

It no longer exists as a “centralized entity”, according to the Office of Personnel Management.

I love that whenever Trump gets proud about a shitty “peace deal” that extorts Ukraine, Putin just immediately yanks the rug out from under him. He’s done it 3 or 4 times this year

I think a reason for optimism for New Yorkers is that this meeting suggests Mamdani is going to be extremely effective at overcoming resistance to his municipal policy agenda.
I don't think you need to think there will be long term shifts in Trump's policies or behavior (there won't be) to enjoy what just happened, sometimes it's good to enjoy things that are funny in the moment

This isn't Trump affirming that he's a fascist, this is Trump - in a better mood than I have literally ever seen him - courteously and humorously giving his new best friend a pass on having said mean things about him, instead of forcing him to writhe his way through an awkward answer.
Reporter: Are you affirming that you think the president is a fascist?

Mamdani: I've spoken about --

Trump: Just say yes, it's easier than explaining.

Wait, hang on - Russia hasn't even agreed to this deal? Get all the fucking way out of here.

It's so Russia-friendly that I assumed it had Russia's blessing, but Putin must have recognized that he's dealing with one of the most incompetent negotiators in American history and thinks he can get more.

I don't want to give the impression that I'm not worried, but I do question the extent to which the US cutting military support to Ukraine remains a viable threat. It already happened a year ago, and I'd be surprised to learn serious intel sharing has been ongoing in the meantime.

The bigger change is presentation, historically, these emails were visually chaotic: sudden colour changes, ALL CAPS, screenshots pasted at random. Classic signs of disordered thinking. Now they’re neat, structured, and grammatically consistent. The delusion hasn't changed, but the formatting has.
