Hello Bluesky. Longtime listener, first time caller.

What am I doing right now? Oh, y’know, just laughing til I cry, still thinking about the Presidential portrait, because this is the face I make when I’m actively pretending to be a comic book villain. (Oct ‘23, if that matters)

It's totally understandable if you're dooming about any facet of the American experiment right now. So your feelings are "valid" in the sense that they represent real anxiety, and I get that. But to vent that anxiety in other people's spaces is wrong for three reasons.

No.

Social safety nets crumble when we wrap them in neoliberal rhetoric aimed at dividing people and deluding them into thinking that everyone--except some tiny group of perfect poor--should be able to pull themselves up by their own bootstraps, even if their boots have been nailed to the floor.

New year, same reminder: The recipe for economic growth isn’t tax cuts for the rich. It’s investment in our people — in health care, infrastructure and education — to build a strong middle class.

You don't grow the economy through trickle-down nonsense.

No idea where this thought is going, but: it's interesting how fans of Neil Gaiman (and before him, Warren Ellis) had no real problem going, "Eh, fuck *that* guy" and walking away when he was outed, but a broad swath of Harry Potter fans have been extremely recalcitrant about leaving it behind.

I know many things are awful but here is one genuinely useful and helpful thing you can do. No matter their party, your representative needs to hear that trans people and our families are not alone and this bill is an unjustifiable and extreme threat to criminalize the health care we need to live.
Tomorrow, the House of Representatives will vote on a bill that bans gender-affirming medical care for any transgender person under 18, and threatens any medical professional providing this care to youth with 10 years in prison.

Tell Congress to protect trans youth and vote NO.
Protect Trans Care Now
As wave after wave of extreme measures to criminalize and strip trans people of rights and safety continue, tell Congress to act.

hard to overstate how bad this is for discrimination against everyone but white people.

I'm saying we are undergoing a wholesale revision of equal protection and anti-discrimination law so that it only protects white people.

Let me explain:
This makes facially neutral policies--like poll taxes and literacy tests--that we know were adopted for discriminatory purposes legal. Organizations can now simply claim there was no discriminatory intent regardless of outcome. It's unconstrained institutionalized racism.
They're just taking an ax to the Civil Rights Act

I mean... yeah. Its an ethnic cleansing campaign, and should be labeled as such.
This is the scandal. Trump isn’t targeting dangerous people. He’s targeting peaceful immigrants. Almost exclusively.

I spent a year in government in a civil law enforcement capacity and there is nothing on this Earth that has come close to the experience of being the guy who gets to say "I'm from the government and we think what happened to you is really fucked up, would you like to testify against the bastards?"
& also underestimate how many government workers are already itching to be given a mandate to do big things and make a positive difference in people’s lives rather than just keep the lights on and tinker around the edges sometimes

The fact that all these ads are either fashwave or 1940’s themed is pretty strong evidence that there are actual, dead serious white nationalists in the comms department at DHS.

Graduate seminar did a deep dive on Thomas Paine’s Common Sense yesterday. At the line, “in America the law is king,” they (14 students from 6 countries) burst out laughing. I've been doing this for 35 years and this is the first time that was a laugh line.
