If Joyce Carol Oates dunking on Musk ends with him completing a Lowtax speedrun, I don't think that'll absolve Oates of her years of weird and periodically racist posters'-madness
BUT
I think she would absolutely be allowed to paint a simplified Musk symbol on her car and put an X across it.

The audience applauded as Luxon asserted that the 400,000 people wanting work or more work would actually fit perfectly into the 20,000 available vacancies.
He then urged young people to have some get up and go. Parents looked worried by this comment - how would they afford to get their kids to Aus?

Being in paid work sucks, actually. Even the most fulfilling job becomes a grind by the simple fact of having to navigate an economic model that atomises your life into a series of unbalanced financial transactions. When you HAVE to do something to survive it can't give you unalloyed satisfaction

It tells you a lot, the way politicians (not just National Party ones) take dismissive, vicious swings at young people.
a) Their actual target is people 45+
b) Who also hate young people
c) Also they assume young people won't vote
d) So who cares if it's true, it gives people an excuse to be mean

I'm a historian. Sewage systems have saved more lives than any medical intervention. Vaccines are second and antibiotics third.
Prior to the 1880s, the urban annual death rate was ~25%; it dropped to ~0.5% in under a generation.

The point isn't really to win over existing supporters though. Instead, it's broadly 3 things:
1) Deter anyone current non-supporters from moving to support them
2) Winning over *anti-racist* voters to oppose them
3) Delegitimising them as not deserving the same benefit of doubt due to other parties

My best guess is that Shakespeare and 19th century texts were added and made compulsory, and Māori and Pacific authors removed, is because it made the senior English curriculum more aligned with Elizabeth Rata's vision.
Remember: she started as its lead writer.
