i wrote a lengthy post about my thoughts on 2025, how it affected my creative output, and what the absence of a concrete future has done to my (everyone's) mental health.

watching Helen Lewis claim she's got the key to understanding American politics is like watching a cat chasing a laser pointer, except the cat is somehow claiming it's figured out how to solve world hunger. also the cat is transphobic and will try to get you fired if you point this out
The text faded to the paywall at the same rate as my eyes would have glazed over anyway

As someone who's been in the speedrunning scene for a decade plus, GDQ's influence on the space has been really dramatic in ways I find very challenging to articulate until I attempt to interact with any community that hasn't had a similar concerted effort to improve its image lol.
The extent to which Games Done Quick has helped to steer the larger speedrunning community - one of the most hardcore video game enthusiast subcultures there is - into becoming something so welcoming, inclusive and supportive astonishes me

in all seriousness people are aggro’ing over increasingly stupid and bad things because they feel useless in the current moment which, to be serious, means you should log off and do more things instead of just screaming at someone

i want to be a calm voice of reason and just state for the record that human beings have been jacking off to cartoon animal people since the stone ages. whether that is or isn't your thing, the only sensible approach is live and let live. this is not a battlefield anyone should be dying on.

Microblogging is just a catastrophically bad form of human interaction. If you sat down to design a system specifically meant to make people act out and create harassment mobs, you'd be hard pressed to build something more effectively toxic.

This isn't fixable. Your safety tools cannot beat the fundamentally broken structure of character limits, rapid indiscriminate propagation of posts, quote-reposting, etc.

I too survived an era on the Internet where people decided it was an Important Political Objective to Drive Me Out Of Public Life, and the thing is, that is never about making real change (what does it do to have one more or less bluecheck?) so much as having a safe place to put all your rage.

Nuking that random person's social media account, or making them cry, or giving them PTSD, is not actually going to end porn bans or bring about socialism in America or whatever, but it's relatively easy to do, compared to those other things, so it feels like you have power. And that sucks.

I just really wish we could get past the idea that Internet dogpiling is important activism, when the truth is that it's not really any less performative than putting a black square on your Instagram or using a hashtag, it just has a much higher human cost.
