It’s actually not technically a leak. CBS News only operates in the US. A non-PSKY owned network Global TV has Canadian rights for 60 Minutes and aired it unedited since the call to pull the episode was made so late in the day. That broadcast was recorded and then shared across the internet.

It’s a misunderstanding of the technology, and laziness. You could give a chatbot a bibliography of papers you’ve read and tell it to write a paper using them as sources. There’s a good chance it’ll fabricate sources anyway because it’s simulating text, not evaluating task-specific logic.
I think this post nails the actual problem, for researchers at least—AI hallucinations would simply not be a problem in academic work if we’d not normalized citation-as-signaling rather than actual engagement—you can only cite a fake paper if you’re not in the habit of reading the papers you cite
