Can I just say as an American it feels bizarre the extent the British media has started fawning over the American right in the last decade? Like, the BBC is covering Charlie Kirk as prominently as CNN, that’s weird

Aaah, my tentacle pot from @roseschmits.bsky.social finally made it through Spanish customs!! 😄

In this vein, a few months ago I watched The Great Dictator, which is both a fun piece of film history as Charlie Chaplin’s first sound film and a rare piece of media that really captures the silliness and stupidity of the OG Nazis - it hits pretty well in these times IMO
we need to teach the 1930s properly so that people know the Reichstag Fire was exactly this stupid
I just can’t believe our Reichstag Fire is the Big Balls Beatdown.

That near-50/50 split before 10 years old followed by a PLUNGE in the transfem rate taking it down to just 30% of referrals at 10-19 is... a lot of transfem suffering condensed into one graph, that's for sure
3 Aug 25 - New study shows vast "over-representation of trans boys" turns out to be vast _under-representation_ of trans girls bec. they: a) come out ~10 years later; b) start puberty later; & c) delay transitioning longer because of deep social animus towards AMAB femininity.

Something about the way LLMs build in the idea that to find something out, you shouldn't read an already existing text that other people have also read (ew!); you should get fresh text generated just for you. Each time, new disposable text.

once again, I’m actually not one of those people who thinks that LLMs and “AI” tools are inherently useless, but I do think our society is currently rolling them out in the most wildly irresponsible and dangerous way possible, in a fashion that is pretty much guaranteed to produce massive backlash

The right wing self conception in this regard is one of the things I think is hardest for people outside that culture to conceive of. I remember the first time I heard an evangelical describe themselves as oppressed in a youth group in rural Ohio circa 2006… just a different reality entirely…
people posting the first superman panel which says he's "champion of the oppressed" as evidence that he's anti MAGA innately...people realize that maga think of themselves as oppressed, right?

Retirement age of 75 feels just about perfect to me. It’s either the last year you can run for office or, in the case of the judiciary, the last year to hear cases. Go live your lives and stop running ours!
just do age limits at that point imo

Still getting real people on the phone at Angus King’s DC office! Go tell them we see what’s happening and that Mainers don’t take kindly to the kind of bullshit Schumer is peddling!
Things are moving quickly, but it looks like these Sen's especially need calls from *constituents* to vote NO on cloture:

Angus King (ME)
Amy Klobuchar (MN)
Jacky Rosen (NV)
Brian Schatz (HI)
Maggie Hassan (NH)
Jeanne Shaheen (NH)
Gary Peters (MI)

Capitol switchboard is 202-224-3121.
This is NEW today. AOC sent this 11 am. Friday morning.

Yes, your calls are still needed. The vote is in the early afternoon. There is still time!

part of the current story is that the new york state & city democratic party apparatus is so corrupt and sclerotic it's literally helping destroy the country

I called Angus King’s office today and told him this - actually got a real person, which was nice. Confirmation that he’s going to stand up for his constituents would be nicer, though
Maine’s reps in the house and senate should withold support for the current GOP budget and spending bill and anything else the administration brings to a vote in Congress until this funding is restored.
I'm appalled by the USDA's decision to pause funding to the University of Maine System.

This will hurt our farmers, halt critical research, and impact students throughout Maine.

Once again, our state is being targeted for retribution—all because our officials are standing up for the rule of law.

Y’all, spend your time on this rather than the horrors today. When I tell you this book gave me feelings…
Today is Woodworking's PUB DAY. I'm so proud of this book, and I'm so glad to hear how many of you have bought and enjoyed it already!

You can buy it here if you're so inclined: bookshop.org/p/books/wood...

And now, the hardest sell I can think of, this book's biggest advocate has thoughts:

Petty grievance of the day: there are too many damn announcements on planes. I promise, you don’t need to tell us the screen has shows on it, you’re just interrupting us while we’re already browsing the list

"I'm voting for someone who will I know will disobey the constitution and I hope they lose in court" is a hell of a take and I hope whoever's running against her in two years is ready to highlight this with regards to every dollar withheld from Maine
Approps Chair Collins voted for Vought but told @pressherald.bsky.social he might lose a lawsuit 🤞🏼🤞🏼🤞🏼:

“I do intend to support his nomination...If there are impoundments, I believe it will end up in court, and my hope is the court will rule in favor of the 1974 impoundment and budget control act"

Just note the Democrats could do everything in their power and still fail to stop the fascist administrative coup. I'd still like them to actually DO THAT, though.

We're entering a period where a lot of well-meaning people may spread disinformation, about anti-trans initiatives, about ICE raids, and so on.

Yes, we need a grapevine, and people under the gun need to be informed quickly.

But that's why it's all the more important that your info is *accurate.*
New rule: if you can't verify some news about trans stuff with at least two verifiable sources, you don't post it. Seeing a lot of people worried about shit they don't need to be yet

I get that discoursing things to death and echo chambers are kind of what we do here, but something deeply depressing about how much my feed today is just infighting in the midst of all the other shit we have to deal with right now

Meanwhile platforms fail to surface key news, vital info is paywalled...

As I've been saying, we need a new tech paradigm, yesterday!

Maybe I’m just not in tune with the right circles, but I really don’t understand why there’s not a serious movement for a constitutional amendment to set an age limit for public office at 70 or 75 or so
My own US Rep has been in office since I was *7*. I am 42
He is 74 and has esophageal cancer!! LET GO OF THE REINS ALREADY

Ok no, you know what? I am gonna talk about something.

They're talking about "regret" of transition but I will tell you that it is the least regretted medical process I can think of.

I hesitate to say "it is the least regretted course of action, period" but it might be.
