Nothing sums up the Beltway media like them watching an election a year ago and deciding that the 2000 year Reich was here and showing up to work in Hugo Boss uniforms and seeing the very next election a year later and deciding that we're living in the third film in a star wars trilogy

At this point, anyone—a university, a law firm, a corporation, a Democrat—bending the knee to Trump is doing it because they want to, not because of any political reality.

I like that republicans keep calling mamdani a “literal communist” because they’ve been calling everyone to the left of william mckinley a communist for a hundred years and they need to distinguish

Zohran Mamdani caught lying that he understood Plato’s allegory of the cave, yet when asked to explain it, he seemed to instead explain Baudrillard’s theory of Simulacra and Simulation where reality has been replaced by symbols and signs, which seems similar to Plato’s theory but is not the same

Given that anyone with a brain ought to recognise how many “national dishes” were impossible pre-Columbian Exchange, it’s nice to finally see pushback on the inherently ethnonationalist/racist claim that some cultures have “authentic dishes” and other “parasitic” cultures only “steal” them

I will always treasure the time that I got to tell the Ancient Near East specialist in the classics & near east department that Ea-Nasir was not only known to randos outside of her field, but had a fanbase and memes.

(She was baffled but pleased, and corrected my pronunciation of his name.)
K1: so we need to learn this lesson about writing
Me: ok ok
We talk about the Sumerians, cuneiform etc
K1/ they really wrote on clay?
Me: yep. Entire complaint letter sometimes
K1: ?
Me: let me introduce you to our local main character, Ea-Nasir...

The tell is when the "free speech" warrior's argument equates to "the people criticizing me are silencing me and should therefore be made to shut up."

It's a pretty obvious tell; makes you wonder about those who keep falling for it time after time after time. Or maybe not wonder so much.
They always start with free speech. It sounds reasonable, doesn’t it? Free speech? And they can use it to shut down anyone who criticises them, because it’s all “free speech”

After “free speech” it’s “protecting women and girls”

And then it’s whatever they actually wanted.
The right-wing campaign group that helped topple Roe v Wade in the US is now working to roll back abortion laws in the UK, with the help of Nigel Farage.

Its first step? Trying to create a debate around "free speech"

I see pieces like this a lot, often w/ a spin of lamenting cultural degeneration, but reading is a LABOR issue, it’s declined because so many people are working overtime or two jobs & employers expect after hours work. France has Earth’s highest reading rate b/c long lunch breaks & labor protections

the past two days truly unlocked a new level of rage I didn’t realize I had in me. every awful person did the usual awful things they do, but dialed up to eleven and all at once so it felt like an avalanche
Just thinking about how the right made up an entirely fictional left wing character that resulted in so many bomb threats and the like and nobody will face consequences. But people on the left who accurately clocked the victim’s life work lost jobs.
