ok I was skeptical about him because of some of the things he said about fraud ($ values I found non-credible). But ... this is good.
Trump's DOJ tells the Minnesota U.S. Attorney's Office to block investigations into ICE shootings and prosecute Don Lemon instead ...

Joseph Thompson *quits Minnesota U.S. Attorney's Office and *represents Don Lemon instead

good shit
Look at who is PHVing Abbe Lowell and team into MN to represent Don Lemon.

I mean, it's pretty hard to talk about Greek myth or Roman myth-history without discussing sexual assault and its cultural centrality, but I'm guessing that's not what you're talking about here.

It's hard to pressure effectively when the sole is curved, but I did add some sad rubber bands and hope.

The art teacher gave me a tiny tube labeled E6000 and wished me luck, but I agree with her that this is probably not going to go well.

Yeah, I knew they had minmaxed for Cute at the expense of Good In Winter Weather, but I hadn't quite realized Sturdy was also a dump stat.

Oh man I need to rewatch that movie. It's always paired up in my mind with L.A. Story. Something about the similar vibes.

I'm told the upper school art teacher always has epoxy! But we only have a twenty minute overlap in unscheduled time.

I will on getting home. At least he's doing well!

Well. At least when the sole of my left boot peeled off entirely this morning, I'd finished walking from the bus stop and was indoors. And I keep backup shoes at work!

So that's how today is going. Currently canvassing coworkers for super glue....

Age verification?

The mimeographed instructions for the school's emergency phone tree pinned to the wall by the phone nook.
Age verification?

I can replicate the exact sounds of dial-up internet.

I played Pong.

I find it takes me a good long time to work any given word out of casual vocabulary, but it's worth the effort. I can be more precise and more nuanced, and avoid collateral damage, all at once!

Language is hard. But it's worth the effort.

(Maybe if the day goes very smoothly I can also read ten more pages of some academic book that I own, find terribly interesting, have not reached the second chapter in yet. There are several.)

Anyway it's time for me to compartmentalize enough to prep two sets of slides, edit and print a quiz on irregular verbs, finish grading a translation quiz, attend a meeting on how we can support a student with an extended medical absence, write some emails to parents, tidy the classroom, not weep.

I mean at least we're in Minnesota now instead of Texas. I really admire the folks fighting the good fight(s) in that state but I could not.

I don't know why I'm waking up sad and stressed every morning.

Anyway, off to teach at a Minnesota school that hasn't been raided by ICE yet, while my spouse takes care of the apartment and tries to deal with what AI and repressive laws are doing to tech & the internet.

We're coping! Kinda!

A succinct and clear thread that also reminds me I need to read Pedagogy of the Oppressed.
So, this is a thing that Paulo Freire describes in the first chapter of Pedagogy of the Oppressed: in the initial phases of a revolutionary struggle, the oppressed don't desire liberation, they desire the power to oppress.

Now, the reasons for this are more complicated.
Been saying this for a while now.

People don't wanna get rid of oppression, they want their turn to be the oppressor.

I sometimes say that Jesus taught God and Christians teach The Church, and obviously not all christians etc etc but

this is a pretty good example of that
the first choice is literally what Jesus would teach, i feel like i'm losing my mind

It is, but they're usually a bit better at pretending otherwise. And they should know it means I won't bother looking at the list at all the next time they try to push one at me.

I mean yes the NIV was my favorite translation. When I was /fifteen/. The only diet book I've bought in my life was as a gift because someone explicitly asked for it. The pop history they're recommending isn't even in a century I read history about!

(Currently on a binge reread of my favorite Martha Wells books, after a reread of my favorite T. Kingfisher books, and then it'll be time for another round of Ann Leckie and Sarah Monette and Elizabeth Bear and Lois McMaster Bujold and Kate Elliot and you'd think the algorithm could catch a hint.)

Kindle: "Look at these carefully selected deals tailored exactly to your interests!"

The Deals: NIV Bible, diet books with "gut" in the titles, random memoirs, self-help books, and one pop history book

...I guess I'm not worried about The Algorithm knowing my true self.

It is absolutely incredible how we have to perform this insane pantomime of respect to the Old Ways when the Old Ways so often demonstrably failed to even reliably feed their historical practitioners reliably and at scale enough by contemporary standards, let alone our own.
