For those who give presents over the winter holidays: What’s one favorite present you got this year?

@karenmcgrane.bsky.social helped me pick out a new leather wallet: Italian-made in midnight navy, with a sartorial embossing on the outside to give it a protective texture. I hope it lasts forever

Being so annoyed by the nerds who want to feel special because they read a few of the great books on substack that I might just turn my substack into a big book/reading club where we go through the classics and talk about them without those dweebs.

true. that's bc you've allowed your sense of style to be narrowly defined by fashion brands, instead of thinking about it in terms of cultural history. over the course of the 20th century, many groups have dressed well, even if they didn't conform to fashion trends or bourgeois respectability

“Went viral” is an old stock phrase in journalism that really does not capture the dynamic of how X dot Com has been tuned to give people like the one specific legislator here the power to intentionally cause this kind of outcome
Texas A&M University will not reinstate a lecturer who was fired after a video of her teaching about gender identity in a children’s literature class went viral, despite a faculty appeals panel unanimously concluding that her dismissal was not justified.
Texas A&M won’t reinstate fired lecturer despite findings
A vice chancellor upheld the firing of Melissa McCoul, seen in a viral video being confronted by a student on her gender identity teachings, saying the termination was done with “good cause.”

This is the list of tallest NBA players ever. Let me know how many of them had good careers, let alone great ones. You’ll find that it’s a pretty small numbers.

I just can’t let hockey fans / journalists ever talk shit about any other sport. I’ve even done work for hockey teams and have said it directly to the face of executives. You can’t be a real sport or a part of the culture if your sport is just for rich people.

No, it makes sense that someone who plays and enjoys hockey has such little knowledge and yet animosity towards basketball. The exceptional thing about Wemby is that he’s doing things people his height usually can’t. Being too tall in the NBA is often a detriment, especially in the small ball era.

Hilarious to call basketball a DEI sport when hockey is just a sport for rich white kids.

He hasn’t let up on American Christians since he became Pope
Pope Leo said in a Christmas Eve sermon that the story of Jesus being born in a stable because there was no room at an inn should remind Christians that refusing to help the poor and strangers today is tantamount to rejecting God himself. For @reuters.com

Seems like a good time to note that many nonfiction publishers do not fact check, or do so only very superficially, and authors who want their work fact checked need to pay for it. This is bad in general but especially when editors are acquiring ‘eye-opening books’ that are just reactionary lies.

It’s also this pretense that the man hasn’t been charged and convicted of sexual crimes as well. The man has a whole Wikipedia page about his sexual misconduct stemming from the 70s.
I’ve heard most journalists and politicians say that Trump hasn’t been directly accused of wrongdoing or implicated in the Epstein Files.

But, there are repeated instances of Trump being directly named as a perpetrator—by victims and by Epstein. It’s not circumstantial, it’s direct.

Also I just wrote about Del Toro’s Frankenstein, how he’s always reluctant to condemn his monsters because he identifies with them, but how monsters sometimes need to be outside the human story. I also wrote about this tension in my own book.
