The Joker vs The Skipper Thanksgiving Dinner Showdown! Their fight over Anton is probably the most tragic aspect of what undoubtedly was a bitter feud, as I’m sure Anton used to play concertina at the Lobster Barrel before Cesar worked his charms to lure him away… “For you, my dear Anton - A PIANO!”

I once asked a bookseller at a large indie store how many people would have to buy a book for it to get the attention of the store buyer and cause an additional order and they said: Three.
I see some book piracy discourse, and, to make a positive argument in favor of buying books, your marginal ability to influence what books get published and support the careers of writers you like is massive compared to most other forms of media.

Me sowing: I will let the turkey stock simmer all day

Me reaping: it is now almost 11 pm, the stock has finally been strained into a massive pot but it is still 180 degrees.

Staring in horror at the dishwasher that has been filled by houseguests (family). The phrase, "None of you are without sin!" is on loop in my head as I pull out tray after tray of plates, glasses, and silverware clearly thrown into it by a deranged person.

Second time I saw a "we're still going to keep using beef tallow in our fried foods because 'taste'* and seed oils are dangerous" and me going nuts in the margins. Thanks, grocery store manager, now I know you can't be trusted with food safety.

y'know, if tech companies weren't so fired up to call every single thing "AI" it would be a lot easier to distinguish "ML spam filter that is well-sandboxed and tuned on your emails" from "giant context and IP-eroding foundation model that makes people paranoid and unhappy"
since the "google is now training gemini on your email contents" thing keeps bumping around here: it's _not happening_. I say this not to defend google but because I know a lot of people that have broken their filtering and made their lives much more annoying from sheer misinformation.
The malwarebytes Google opting-your-emails-into-ai-training thing is not true. The post is based on one bad tweet.

I know anti-tech lamenting is a Bluesky core principle, but please use the same judgement you would for any other clickbait.

@americanfietser.bsky.social : Once again biked to the grocery store, picked up most of Thanksgiving dinner, and biked back. The only time drivers aren't annoyed is when you've got a child carrier, otherwise you're a nuisance to them (locally).

In the past, I've put dinner for 14 in the carrier.

the “thanksgiving food is bad” discourse raises its ugly head every year, but the truth remains that thanksgiving food can be amazing as long as you know how to cook. the problem is we’re throwing a few million sunday drivers directly into a grand prix
I think this is unfair to turkey. turkey is good but hard to cook well because it is so damn big. turkey *parts* are great but lack the esthetic appeal of a centerpiece bird.
it is tired to the point of cliche to say if turkey was good, people would make it more than once a year. but it is understated that at least one American explodes every Thanksgiving in a brave attempt to make the main dish more palatable

It really is just simple geometry.

You cannot build a functional city if everyone brings a 2-ton living room on wheels with them.
The entrance to the 3-storey bike parking garage at Utrecht Central holding 12,500 bicycles. It’s free for the first 24 hours, linked to the station, and used by tens of thousands every day. This is what happens when a country treats bikes as real transport infrastructure, not an afterthought.

this sort of thing gets lost in the free fare conversation, along with the actual cost of enforcement
I took the Red line down to Raymond St today and back.

The bus fare inspectors thing is weird. I'm white, and I just get on and off the bus.

Every non-white person gets asked to verify their bus pass. I've got my MyPass app ready to show, but I don't even get asked.

This claim is both absurd--what increased enforcement, in which areas, and what tougher laws?--and scientifically absurd given the overwhelming empirical evidence that tweaks in behavior of punishment bureaucrats are not what affects levels of violence in a society.
