The left needs to stop being afraid of the state. Like, I get it, the American state has often been hostile to the left. But the solution to that is to take that power and use it for good rather than evil.

You are not going to mutual aid $4 billion a month, and when presented with that fact, they said "well what if only the people who really need it take it?"

ARGH NO STOP NOW YOU'RE DOING MEANS TESTING BUT LEFTISHLY.

I know people hate Will Stancil, but this is simply objectively true.

The democratic socialist future is not piecemeal private mutual aid, it's sufficient taxation and spending to sustain the state capacity to bureaucratically ensure that no American goes hungry, homeless, or without health care.
Guys I know you’re all going to yell at me here but mutual aid is not meaningfully distinct from the kind of privatized community charity system where poor people go to the church and hope someone has donated a hot meal. It’s not progressive, it’s not effective, it’s not good service provision.
"poor enough to need mutual aid"

Everyone needs mutual aid.

I think the fundamental problem with Will, and the Democrats broadly, is they have gone all in on this data-driven philosophy that is so obsessed with observing and understanding the current moment that it has lost the ability to perceive a future that isn't just the current moment extended forever.

The problem with this premise is a hypothetical president AOC or (insert progressive here) would almost certainly be filled with a bunch of overconfident, uninformed ninnies albeit for reasons entirely different from those animating Sullivan and co.
Has anyone written the definitive piece about Jake Sullivan’s world-historic errors on Gaza and Israel that got Trump elected, and how he and his team were a bunch of overconfident, uninformed ninnies who should be nowhere near power ever again?

We need a President AOC just to break from this past

Corollary of thinking anything in society you don’t like is the govt repressing you—interracial couples in TV commercials, “Happy Holidays,” trans people you never meet being themselves, etc.—is thinking that the president, Supreme Court, and police aren’t govt when they do something you agree with.
I think one of the defining things about our era and about conservativism, is an inability to distinguish between like, the actual government, and mid-level marketing managers at Target (who choose "happy holidays" to avoid leaving out non-Christian customers)
In retrospect the Bush-era War On Christmas stuff seems more ominous than it did at the time. It was just cable news guys crying about dumb/fake shit, then and now; I mean the campaign to turn Christmas, which most everyone likes and feels warmly about, into just another thing to get mad about.

The Greeks called the practice of speaking truth to power παρρησία. It is the essential characteristic of noble thought and heroic deed. Conversely, a person cowering in the face of power and refusing to challenge it is known as a συκοφάντης, or sycophant (that's where the word comes from).

UPDATE: CNN confirms that "the envelope [holding the Epstein-Nassar Note] was sent from the Metropolitan Correctional Center in New York City [where Epstein was being held] to Nassar"—*and* got vetted by federal officials.

Which explains the Virginia postmark (where the FBI is).

it's sometimes crazy that we made cops the ones in charge of enforcing the laws. extremely questionable decision.
jesus the Palm Beach Police really sought arrest warrants against underage Epstein victims for coming forward and cooperating, and (purported) admitting to crimes, and it caused the victims to become uncooperative with the federal investigation

There are 78 Burke-class destroyers and we're planning to build 99. They say they're going to build "20-25" Trump-class thingys instead of the Burke's replacement.

Taking them at their word, that's a 75% reduction in surface combatant numbers.

Congratulations navalists, you played yourself.

I count 10 cities in 2025 that are on track to have the fewest murders since at least 1970. Newark is on pace to have the fewest murders since 1956 (though only have data through Oct this year) and San Francisco is on pace to have the fewest murders since 1942.

Might be some crossed wires here, too. "Mona Lake" might be a game of telephone from Lady Mona K, which is the boat Ghislaine Maxwell's dad owned and died on. Might also just be Mona Lake. Might also be bullshit. No way to know without a very public Congressional hearing imo!
