Kudos to the NFL for giving us Josh Johnson, Max Brosmer and Chris Oladokun starting games on Christmas today. Truly magical stuff.

As politicians push for an expanded carceral state, it's important to remember that crime is actually at a historic low.

@jeffasher.bsky.social's level-headed Substack is a great source of perspective on crime-related issues and trends:
Reported Crime May Be Falling At A Historic Rate In The US

Just overheard this conversation and am beaming with pride.

7 YO: "Alexa, who is playing on the Monday night game?"

Alexa: "On Monday, the Atlanta Falcons will play the Los Angeles Rams at 7 PM"

7 YO: "Daddy doesn't like the Falcons, daddy doesn't like the Rams."

I love Bluesky. If you want to go by per capita then Newark's murder rate is the lowest since 1959 (lowest raw count since 1956). I apologize for this grave error.

New Orleans, Louisiana everybody

I count 10 cities in 2025 that are on track to have the fewest murders since at least 1970. Newark is on pace to have the fewest murders since 1956 (though only have data through Oct this year) and San Francisco is on pace to have the fewest murders since 1942.

Any fan of the Under Siege franchise could tell you that battleships were still being taken over by terrorists hell-bent on nuking Hawaii as late as 1992
Former Pentagon spox on CNN misrepresenting the history of battleships in the USN (they were employed long after WW2, saw combat as recently as ‘91) and it’s absolutely ridiculous that I have to hear this stuff at work.

"Many Christmases ago, I went to buy a doll for my son. I reached for the last one they had, but so did another man. As I rained blows upon him, I realized there had to be another way."

Looking at the historic reduction in US homicides from many angles. I appreciate the Real-Time Crime Index data - 12-month rolling trends for 570 cities 2018-2025. But this graph from U Chicago Crime Lab made me appreciate what Baltimore and St Louis have accomplished from their peak to 2025.
