I’m not a posting/re-posting kind of person, so I wouldn’t recommend following me unless you’re dying to see my comments on other people’s posts. I’m here for baseball, basketball, urbanism, travel, tech, and my unfortunate addiction to current events.

The name "Popular Science" doesn't mean we shift our coverage depending on public opinion. It means we cover relevant subjects that are rigorously researched, reliable, and grounded in reality.

And trans lives are grounded in reality.

We see y'all. No matter what.

First-of-a-kind study shows encouraging data for trans kids who socially transition
Ninety-four percent of participants in a new study stood firm in their trans identity after five years, and "detransitioning" is rare.

In the face of major clean-up efforts ahead from today's storm damage, & a 2nd extreme wind event brewing on Friday, there's some good news to hold onto tonight: not a single new fire ignition in CO despite half the state blanketed in Red Flag/High Wind Warnings today. A big win for #Colorado! #COWx

There is no such thing as bicycle propaganda. It is exactly as much fun as you think. It makes you feel good. It is not hiding any of its challenges. It is terrible at highlighting all of its own upsides.

As a movement and industry it has never needed $100million ads to try to be convincing.

The only way you can still pretend that Reagan was good is if you believe in his policies or don’t believe in anything at all. Either one is disqualifying.
The presidency once served as a reminder of our common humanity. Ronald Reagan described its purpose as building "a nation composed of good and decent people."

I lived thru the end of public smoking. Early in my career I presented to city councils who were smoking, in front of audiences who were smoking.

Smoking in restaurants, airplanes, hospitals…

All of that seems insane now, but it was very controversial when we DID change it.

We CAN change things.
It’s crazy that people used to be able to just smoke cigarettes wherever they wanted

When I lived in LA 97-99 (and you may recall this @davidjroth.bsky.social), Rob Reiner led the smoking ban in bars. I couldn’t believe bars could exist without cigs. And I don’t even smoke.

He kickstarted all of it. I still go to bars. I never have to Febreez my clothes.

So, also that.

Rep Lauren Boebert's now-explained campaign expenses at a Kid Rock concert were tied to her $12,000/person fundraiser in a suite at the Kid Rock show.

That's about $521 for every diggy-diggy-diggy in Bawitdaba, or $173 on a per diggy basis.

One theory I have is that competence, self-control, responsibility, and expertise have all been feminized, leaving “masculinity” with the realm of impulsivity and petulance. So the divide is not really between “femininity” and “masculinity” so much as between adulthood and childishness.
Everything else aside, the idea that this is a model for many men of *masculinity* is so wild. This? This is "manly"? This is how people think it's cool to act?

Congrats to Hall of Famer Jeff Kent, who was on Survivor in 2012 and said this after he was kicked off. It should be noted that the top marginal tax rate in 2012 was 35%, unchanged from the last 6 years of the Bush era. Which makes you wonder whether maybe the tax rate was not his beef with Obama.

What a lede on this story: Man who complained about narrowing a road in order to protect pedestrians, so much that the city eventually reversed the change, then kills a woman on that very road with his car www.washingtonpost.com/business/int...
America’s plan to protect pedestrians failed. A young woman’s death reveals why.
U.S. officials adopted Europe's Vision Zero initiative, but many cities have seen an increase in pedestrian fatalities despite efforts to improve road safety.

We're going to read more and more about regulating dangerous "e-bikes," which are actually electric motorcycles. Why not tell your concerns to the 40,000+ US families each year mourning their dead loved ones, whose lives were taken by the terribly lethal cars and trucks we've decided are essential.
