Insane but true fact: making US roads as safe as Canadian or European roads would save more lives than eliminating murder from the US.

I didn't know bus drivers were allowed to stop on their route for 10 minutes (9:28-9:38 northbound 56 at Kinzie/Desplaines) to pop into Jewel for some groceries 🤔 @chicagocta.bsky.social

All Trump or Biden would have had to do to get a sizeable share of independents squarely in their camp for years to come was legalize weed. Biden whiffed, and now Trump whiffed even worse. Shrug emoji.

Spanish high speed rail construction costs are 17.7 million EUR per km and they have 3973 km so that's 70.3 billion EUR or $81.6 billion total. Construction started in 1992. That's $2.5 billion per year (not accounting for inflation). Spain has 49 million people, so that's $51 per person per year. 💀

Back of the envelope analysis shows Chicago needs to double the amount of housing within 5 miles of downtown and add ~635,000 people to this area.

Cairo has 64 times the population density of Charleston, but the cars only move 25% slower on average

I've been looking at cities recently to find the most populous 5km radius circle in each. Turns out it's extremely difficult for sprawling sun belt metro areas with zero density gradient that are entirely single family sprawl.
Amazing piece of geography trivia in map form. This graphic ranks the 10 most densely populated 2-square-mile, 4-sided polygons in US cities. Fun to look at. Source: buff.ly/NU3L634

Compiling a dataset of how many people are within a 1 hr walk of city centers around the world vs how many are within a 1 hr drive of city centers in the US using Tomtom congestion data and "population around a point". Houston slightly beats Dhaka. Chicago slightly beats Karachi.

Lots of ghost buses this evening, and not in a good way. Waited 21 minutes for the eastbound 77 and 17 minutes for the westbound 76, during which time I tried to take the 22 and also got ghosted so I went back to waiting on the 76

Only ~2 million people in the US live in areas with a population density over 30,000 people per km2. In France it's 1 million. Spain, 2 million. But Turkey? 9 million. It doesn't even register in other European countries. Western European cities are not that dense! Middle eastern & Asian cities are.

The No Kings March in Chicago is one of the largest gatherings I’ve seen here. Looking down from by the river, the crowd stretches for blocks down Michigan Ave and wraps around Wacker Dr. This video is from a few minutes ago and the end of the protest is nowhere in sight.
