Grateful to all who’ve read and supported my AI coverage lately. This is probably the most difficult work I’ve done on the subject to date and I hope it it can be a wake-up call. My profound thanks to Kent Taylor for trusting me with his son Alex’s story.
He Had a Mental Breakdown Talking to ChatGPT. Then Police Killed Him
Alex Taylor believed he had made contact with a conscious entity within OpenAI’s software, and that she'd been murdered. Then everything went wrong.

There is one valid way to mess with them, which I'll do my best to explain.

Consider this: I'm fiercely creative. People have given my work praise and awards. I know that my best work comes from minimal oversight.

However, I am also a consultant and have seen some things...

Anti-porn laws can't stop porn, but they can stop free speech. In the meantime, people will continue to get off to anything and everything.

"Art's not just a pretty picture."

My mum told me this when I was coming up with ideas for my GCSE art piece...and it was the best thing I ever learnt about art. It's the intent, the emotions, the process, the message behind it that matters...and that's something AI art users fail to understand.

the first rule of player feedback is that players are not game designers. you are the fucking game designer. players don't know the first thing about game design nor do they know what they actually want until you do the work and give it to them. if we listened to players everything would be fortnite
I once worked on a visual novel game where all the surveys and focus groups said that nobody wanted romance, they only wanted mystery and sci-fi.

Then 75+% of clicks in-game went to stories with explicit romantic or sexy themes.

'These kids do not care about romance': Game devs want to know what today's teens want, and surveys say sex and romance isn't it
Young people want stories about friendship more than romance, say researchers and industry execs.

I have a simple motto which I hold myself to:

"Don't look for reasons to be unhappy"

You'll know when you have a real problem on your hands, and it's much more fun to ask how that problem can be solved using your own brain and your own skills rather than an app or a widget.

That's the fun in life

This is the kind of thing that makes me want to scream in the void. Perhaps the void still has media literacy by some miracle.
On twitter people are talking about whether books from prior to 1970 are too difficult to read. This is what a generation of valuing STEM over the humanities has done to us.

i want to be clear that i don't believe stories or games have to have giant socially engaged narratives in order to be worthy of people's time (my own game is far from)

what is important is creating a *possibility space* - inspiring a feeling that you, or the world, is capable of more than you see
🧵 i'll tell you a secret.

i'm not here because i want to make a video game. i'm here because ever since i was young, i've understood art is how you change the world

i was a writer. i wrote 100s of 1000s of words, practicing what i'd say. & i watched books go out of style among the general populace

This is excellent advice. You can, with a little careful thought and maybe advice from a bookseller, buy books for people you hate that have been carefully calculated to annoy the hell out of them while looking like you were totally TRYING to find a book that would match their interests.
Note: If you're still looking for holiday gifts for loved ones, buy books. You can also buy books for people you hate. The authors will not mind.
