Tonight is carnival night in Glastonbury, the music is everywhere, the excitement is utterly tangible; it is delightful.

This is a particularly timely Transgender Awareness Week. Thank you to all the trans members of @libdems.org.uk - we see you, we appreciate you, and we're sorry for the grief you go through in the name of our party. We are hugely encouraged by the swell of support for you this year.

Today is the beginning of Trans Awareness Week.

It’s an opportunity for us to celebrate trans people, acknowledge the challenges they face, and reflect on how we as a society can work together to improve trans people’s lives.

Right yes I've seen the Waitrose ad now and the things that nobody told me are that a) this is our old local pub b) this is outside our old flat, so thank you, nothing says Christmas like being extremely bloody homesick (house is also Rebecca's childhood home in Ted Lasso)

Every office has an executive tier whose emails are like:

saw on news , , can we replce complianc dept with web 3

and a worker tier whose emails are like:

Dear Jim,
First of all, I *love* this idea! Unfortunately, I spoke with Legal and identified a few issues with this approach. For starters…
Well, it's a little clearer now why billionaires are so invested in technology that produces better written emails.

I find this so confusing. You're learning a whole language, not just "how to read". I learnt the English alphabet and read with a dictionary next to me for like, a decade. I remember learning to read letters, and simultaneously learning to look up words as a toddler.
November 12, 2025 at 7:30 PM
I think it has to be American Psycho, because I didn't realise you could actually do anything at all with words, there are actually no book police. It made me realise what a choice every single act of storytelling is.
performative reading, lack of reading skills, nobody's reading anymore -- NO!

tell me about a book that changed you

for me? the *extremely* ahistorical novel, THE AGONY AND THE ECSTASY which I read at 13 and was like, "Oh, art can be *everything* to a maker, for good and bad"

I am sick and tired of UK politicians' ill-informed crusade to make the UK the least safe place to go online, and the weak link in the global Internet.

I just wish less of my life was spent dismissing kind ‘offers’ of ‘help’ from ‘AI’ ‘assistants’.
November 12, 2025 at 11:20 AM
I think we have to live through a maddening era of "AI" standing in for "objective, sensible" whilst also being radically unaccountable because nobody takes the design and parameter-setting of these things to be an actual, political job.
The difference between including "AI" in a headline and not is going to get super-interesting, depending on the understanding of whether or not the intended audience is for/against.
I think so. This is the press release - it feels like AI-powered was shoehorned in so it would get press attention.

I reckon a shared national popular culture is just as important (if not more important) than a fact based, impartial news service for liberal democracy to work.

This is utterly shocking. The Olympic spirit is about inclusive humanity and kindness.

The discriminatory harm of a blanket ban on trans and intersex people taking part in Olympic sport as women couldn’t be further from the ideal.
The International Olympic Committee is set to ban trans and intersex women from competition. This is despite the fact that for 20 years, the IOC has allowed trans athletes to compete and only 1 has ever competed and none have ever won a medal.

The poppy is such a specific thing to me, a person who grew up by the Poppy Factory, where we, as small children in school and at Brownies, regularly sang Old Songs and Christmas carols to deeply scarred, disabled and traumatised men at the Star and Garter. I do indeed remember them.
