Statement from us on today's ruling:

"As LGBT+ Liberal Democrats... we don't think Britain is the sort of country where people should have to show their 'papers, please' in order to use the loo. ...we do not support efforts to legislate in ignorance to enforce conformity."

Thank you all. 💛
We stand firmly for LGBT+ rights as inalienable human rights.

We'll support our members and we're committed to seeking advice from fellow AOs on their area of expertise.

The last two weeks have been a tough one for @libdems.org.uk members, through no fault of their own.

We're grateful to the huge number of members, internal election candidates, and fellow Affiliated Organisations like @libdemwomen.bsky.social who have stood alongside us.

Statement below:

Today is Intersex Solidarity Day.

Intersex people are a distinct and uniquely vulnerable minority who face specific issues in life.

Lib Dem policy, as passed this Spring Conference, calls for a ban on medically unnecessary, non-consensual treatments or surgeries for intersex infants and children.

The RO in our internal elections has sent this update round. It is nowhere near good enough: trans and non-binary candidates should never be third-spaced in this way. The gender quotas in Article 2.5 of the party Constitution should be implemented as-written - or suspended if they can't be.

Excellent and sobering piece in @libdemvoice.org today by Cllr. Chris Northwood. All @libdems.org.uk members should read it. 👇
Reflecting on a week as a trans Lib Dem councillor
Last week has been hard and the subject of a lot of soul searching. I’m a Lib Dem for a lot of reasons. I believe in the values of liberalism and appreciate how the party approaches the nuance of thos...

Someone asked us if the events earlier this week around quotas affected our endorsements in the @libdems.org.uk internal elections. This was our answer.
No, actually: the reaction of the candidates has by and large been excellent. Our honorary vice-president @joshbabarinde.bsky.social and member @pruebray.bsky.social have both shown excellent leadership in their responses, and we are happy to recommend both of them for Party President, for instance.

LGBT+ Liberal Democrats condemn our party's decision to base internal gender quotas on sex assigmed at birth.

This trans-exclusionary decision is an attack on one of the most vulnerable groups in our society.

Thank you for this, Marie. 🧡
The voices of trans people must be heard in Parliament.️‍‍ I’ve urged full scrutiny of EHRC’s guidance, which risks undermining their rights. Lib Dems call on the Government to protect everyone fairly and ensure people aren’t excluded from safe facilities or public life.

Thank you, Tom - you're quite right. Thank you for all your work as the Lib Dem MP on the Joint Committee on Human Rights. 🧡
The Council of Europe has warned that the UK gov’s treatment of trans people may breach human rights law.

This must be a wake up call.

We’ve seen an increase in hostility towards trans in recent years.

Everyone deserves dignity, safety, & respect - that includes trans people.

The Human Rights Commissionner weighs in, appropriately in National Hate Crime Awareness Week.

His letters are worth reading.
Read my two letters to the #UK:
1. Protests: I call for a review of the legal framework and the reconsideration of provisions in the Crime & Policing Bill that could restrict freedom of assembly.
2. Trans people: I warn against exclusion&zero-sum approaches

Quite a bloody cheek, this, given the UK has the most hostile regime towards healthcare for young trans people and their families in the world (www.gov.uk/government/s...).

Ming Campbell was one of the most influential Lib Dems of the last few decades - his opposition to the Iraq War inspired a whole generation of Lib Dems to join, and his allyship on LGBT+ matters was always both strong, and appreciated.

He was also remarkably kind. We will miss him.

YES! Chris is a fantastic councillor and advocate for her community. It's a thoroughly deserved award, and good to see HQ having no truck with any nonsense about it. Well done, Chris!
The Express asked us about awarding the Patsy Carlton Prize to Cllr Chris Northwood. We responded:

"This prize acknowledged an exceptional woman in Cllr Chris Northwood. The message it sends to women members and voters is that the Liberal Democrats honour and value all of our women members."

For those who pay attention to UK politics, the Liberal Democrats and #LDConf

A bunch of TERFs tried first thing this morning to impose a transphobic policy on our internal elections (they wanted to exclude trans women from the gender balance criteria)

They failed, spectacularly.

Glad to see that @libdems.org.uk Conference had no more patience for hate on the agenda than it did last time. We, and Conference, saw that amendment for what it was. Thank you to everyone who voted.

The arrest of four people after this incident is an outrageous affront to the freedom of expression enjoyed by UK citizens. It is a human right we all enjoy and is protected in law.
