Caffeinated bodybuilder. Highly talkative. Enthusiastic gig-goer, long-term internetter. Chaotic dropspinner. Any/any.
Anyway, there's been some awful stuff this year, in the world at large and in my corner of it, but I've also had some great luck. I've worked really hard and had that pay off in more than one area for once. I've been supported in new ways, and even maybe made some new friends. 2025, what a time.

I see Ronan Keating's got his earring back in, that's nice.

1. Suede - Antidepressants

Ridiculous night, actually impossible to be closer to Brett at a gig, way to have a new album launched literally into your face. Everything I could've wanted it to be, and I will never tire of this song. What a year for live music.

2. The Last Dinner Party - Sail Away

I love this song SO much and maintain it's because Abigail is, like me, annoyed that Orinoco Flow isn't called Sail Away, but it just makes me cry, full on weep, every. single. time. Followed by The Scythe, this band are on fire.

3. Patrick Wolf - Teignmouth

This is our first dance song, and more than that, it is the extremely rare harp version that we had as our first dance, and more than THAT, it is in Kingston, at home, AND it was P's birthday...utterly perfect. Crap video, great sound :D

4. Patrick Wolf - Under This Weather

Utterly breathtaking scenery, really, this was otherwordly stuff JUST LOOK AT THE MOON. Apart from the horror of driving up the hill to it, everything about the Minack Theatre is a wonder, and this album, there, was a true privilege.

5. Suede with Paraorchestra - The Wild Ones

Much of my favourite Suede stuff was unvideoed this year, but the whole Southbank Centre Takeover was majestic. Suede from a distance is not always the best thing, but the sound where we were was fantastic, so, worth it.

6. Patrick Wolf - Hymm of the Haar
I could've pulled a dozen videos from these astonishing off mic acoustic sessions but this one has the off-screen arrival of the lift, announcing itself in English and Welsh, and an entire family disembarking mid-set: Patrick is unbothered

7. Skunk Anansie - Weak

ICONIC, at last, we have waited thirty years to see Skunk Anansie and they truly did not disappoint. And in my old uni hall at that. Couldn't quite believe I was seeing it, so glad I caught this one.

8. The Human League - Together in Electric Dreams

Considering we got free tickets for this, and the Human League turn out to be absolutely incredible live still, this was a great night out. We were very emotional by the time they got to this, much beloved song.

9. Olivia Rodrigo ft. Robert Smith - Friday I'm in Love / Just Like Heaven

Our first Glastonbury, and we got some magic - I was so sure she was going to bring out Ed Sheeran and then, it was like the actual opposite, amazing moment, even this far back in the crowd.

10. Little Simz - Young

SUCH an artist, just a complete wonder, live, the poetry of her work is really something, and her stage presence is magnificent. Brilliant show, and this was just so Kingston for me XD

11. Suede - The Sadness in You, The Sadness in Me

This was just such a treat, already the underrated b-side of an era it was ace to hear, but the collective delight at AJ having it largely sung personally to him (as it should be) was particularly joyous.

12. Manic Street Preachers - This is Yesterday

Having caught the Manics twice this year, this was probably my favourite from both sets. I like the new stuff well enough, and I'm so delighted to see them continuing to pick up new fans, but this acoustic was a treat.

13. Roger Daltrey - The Kids are Alright

The Who were my first proper big gig, and it was extraordinary to see Roger Daltrey again, truly one of the all-time great frontmen, doing what he was born to do.

14. AU/RA - Dance in the Dark

Having listened to this so much since it came out, it was wild to see her in a tiny Camden pub, and literally be sitting on the stage. She's such a great performer, I'm so glad she's made her way back after a rough couple of years.

In before the end of the year, my top 15 gig videos from a frankly ludicrously good year for gigs!

First up: ALT BLK ERA - Rave Immortal. First gig of 2025, great energy, huge sound, love to see them picking up a European tour support and BBC introducing this year...

Just texted a friend "can you remind me when you're around tomorrow/overmorrow" and I just think if a few of us really gave it a try suuuper casually we could bring back this word for day after tomorrow next year

Excellent to have started the last day of the year by waking up at 4am. Had to get up and put the heating on just now which should give those of you who know me an indication as to how cold it is...

Guys guys guys, I found the archive of the Royal Institution Christmas Lectures (it's not an achievement, they've not hidden them) - you can watch every single one since they started televising them in the 60s:

I love watching them every year, now I can see them all!

2. Suede - Somewhere Between an Atom and a Star

Firstly, I love this, Suede at their most Pink Floyd. There's a significant chunk where I'm six inches from Brett's fringe, a haircut I've thought about daily since 1993. So strange to have it premiered through the fringe.

3. Zaho de Sagazan - Les garçons

I have been OBSESSED by this song this year, I think I've listened to it nearly every day since discovering it whilst having a bath back in January. It's done wonders for my French verbs, too.

4. JADE - Angel of My Dreams

Knockout good pop song, speaking of Glastonbury sets I loved, I thought Jade was stunning. Top tier human, such a journey behind her already and the most incredible solo debut album: I can't wait to see what she does next.
