Good grief: that is deeply worrying. Glad it wasn't sepsis though!

Sepsis is nothing to be sniffed at; but they should have established it wasn't that within 40 minutes (life threatening otherwise). Thereafter, diagnosis likely to drag on...
NEW: The biggest union in the BBC, Bectu, has written to culture secretary Lisa Nandy and BBC chair Samir Shah, demanding the removal of Robbie Gibb from the BBC Board.

They say Gibb, a political appointee, is a “direct block to the BBC maintaining its chartered objective of independence”.
NEW: Lisa Nandy to look again at political appointments to the BBC’s board as part of charter renewal discussions.

She said concerns have been raised over the appointment of Sir Robbie Gibb, a Conservative first appointed to the board by Boris Johnson.
Starmer isn't Britain's worst ever prime minister, but he is Labour's worst ever prime minister and it's not even close

But which ****ing generosity is this? Everyone I know pays a small fortune in NHS/Visa fees. Xenophobic/rascist dogwhistles every ****ing day. For shame.

Labour could, if not for a humane reason then at least a political one, be countering Reform's narrative. That's the only way to beat them on this. Instead they're emulating it, and in so doing reinforcing it. If Reform win the next election it will be entirely on this government for facilitating it

I don’t want McSweeney sacked because of this briefing ‘war’. I want him sacked because he’s steered Labour down such an awful, xenophobic path and paved the way for Farage in number 10.

The BBC and Starmer’s Labour govt share much in common. They’re easily bullied and often afraid, as institutionalised too often are, of exercising their own power. They then appear weak and ineffectual. They’re judged against standards to which their critics would themselves would never adhere...

All PMs are flawed but I think if you have no coherent vision, no ability to make decisions quickly, no humour or charisma when addressing the public, no strong roots in your party, no talent for charming MPs and no control over your own office, then you are unlikely to be able to turn it around

2023: Commission unblocks €10.2B for Hungary on back of Potemkin-judicial "reforms"

2024-25: Non-stop violations of judicial independence, with latest wave of intimidation in open breach of EU law outlined in this @verfassungsblog.de post. Consequence: none with no money clawed back...
In Hungary, judges are being doxed – their names, addresses, and private data leaked and publicized for supposed political leanings.

TAMÁS MATUSIK traces how this new wave of intimidation exposes the fragile state of judicial independence in Hungary.

To knit together two stories: through intimidation, litigation & extortion, Trump is clearly trying to create a media ecosystem where nobody asks him about Epstein - or indeed anything discomfiting. It is appalling to see so many UK media individuals & institutions aiding & abetting his corruption.
Rough day to be any sort of survivor of sexual violence. Solidarity to all of you, please be kind to yourselves
Can none of these millionaires sex criminals write in full sentences? Have you heard of paragraphs? Punctuation? No wonder ChatGPT sounds like a genius to these clowns.
Maybe it’s just the Humanities professor in me, but let it be noted that events of today (ahem) have demonstrated the value of being able to assess a large volume of qualitative data and do careful textual analysis with deep attention to context.

This is Robbie Gibb’s BBC declaration. He says he owns 100% of the Jewish Chronicle. If that is the case, where did the money come from??

What potential conflicts of interests does he have? When is he going to answer these questions? And who is going to ask them?

We need the left to be friends with itself atm; yes, even unto Ian Dunt and the Novara media lot. The stakes are so high. Difficult. But. We need some form of operational coalition that blocks the rightist shite.
My takeaway from every new Epstein revelation is that some powerful people victimized many powerless young women, many more knew, some actively enabled it--and we're still being told that MeToo and accountability for sexual violence have gone too far

If anyone in Labour isn’t utterly panicked, they’re for the birds.

Labour haven’t won over Reform waverers but have fractured their own vote in various directions.

Don't tempt the gods....
In an interview about Palantir's creeping involvement in the British state and the NHS, I told @prospectmagazine.co.uk: “Its business is death and destruction. This is not an organisation you want running the democratic jewel of the postwar period.”

How Palantir infiltrated the state
At a moment of national emergency, the government handed our data to Peter Thiel’s controversial company

All the more powerful a critique coming from the (understandably) hopefuls of the election period than, say, the terminally negative Novara grouping. I do wish they would get it together, or find a leader to integrate the factions and govern competently. This is an existential moment for democracy.

Not sure anyone remembers Monti these days. One of the current problems is surely just how ahistorical the media environment has become. And yes, he was dreadful, not even a good technocrat - unable to question/interrogate the ambiguities (eg, EU competition policy).

It's been clear for months that Morgan McSweeney and those around him are unable to cope with the challenges of 21st century government. Will be interesting to see who replaces him.

The Government can keep shouting. It's talking to itself.

The YIMBY-NIMBY divide exists only in Westminster's echo chamber.

Meanwhile, the public have made themselves clear. They want homes that work with nature, and leaders who listen.
Was any of last nights briefing from Number 10 done with the public in mind? Hard to think of a more perfect example of why so many people are now thinking, whatever the risks we may as well roll the dice on Reform/the Greens/someone else because it’s perma chaos as it is.
