My big takeaway from last week's election, as I told @perrybaconjr.bsky.social , is that this should be an accountability election not just for MAGA, but for the commentariat that keeps telling us the wrong thing about what’s going on in America.

Absolutely. I volunteer to design!

Anyone could've run against Biden, and some did, but no one of note nor any who got significant support. Nothing stopped anyone popular except the surety that they wouldn't beat him, & that it'd hurt their future ambitions.

Harris was an unprecedented switch a month before the formal convention.

True facts.

There'd be big fights over what gets into that curriculum...but there are also big conflicts over the curricula that educated the current representatives (who are quite miseducated), so...

Petty tyrants all around.

Exactly.

Sortition is a form of representative gov't, kinda like jury service, in which representatives are chosen by lottery. 1 plus is leaders who match US on class, sex, etc. 1 knock is that reg people may not know or be smart enough to govern well, even w/ supports.

But this is what we have now, so... 👇

What if I told you that the University of Michigan was one of the most infamous offenders of faculty and student rights during McCarthyism? It feels like their current moves targeting student protestors are in alignment with this dubious honor.

Parties are shells that are continuously remade. Compare Ds/Rs in 1868, 1904, 1932, 1972, & today on class, race, gender, immigration, & religion.

Most of us want more parties, but that isn’t* viable w/o proportional representation.

Since 1972, all nominees are directly chosen by voters. Do that.

When CA launched Prop 50, it was polling at 38%. And so, we did it anyway. Winning campaigns requires that your GOALS define your actions, recognizing opinion - including who agrees to vote - is malleable. In other words, be a thermostat, not a thermometer.

I don't doubt it was on the minds of many voters -- but were you hearing it specifically from people who hadn't made up their mind yet?

I spoke to CNN about how demoralizing it was to watch Stanford leadership stay silent while contrarians on campus launched unscientific attacks to stifle Stanford researchers. Now, those attacks have gone nationwide and much of MAHA leadership have ties to Stanford.

I doubt that was on the minds of most folks who were undecided about whether to vote or who to vote for.

If it never happens, it won’t even register with most voters.

They’ll rename them “alpha-alanine” too. (I don’t actually know what those are!)

Agreed. It's very similar to the problem with mainstream news. Usually the facts are right (apart from routinely printing lies pols say), but the framing/context is so wildly off that the usual result is gaslighting.

Next up, probably: the mean on the 0-100 scale is 126 because the codebook didn't say missing = 999.

I’m seeing convergence on 2 explanations for Dems caving: 1) Trump more willing to inflict pain on public than Dems (Ezra Klein), 2) protect the filibuster

But these are still puzzles (derogatory) because strategic actors should anticipate them. They don’t explain why now

Basically right when you squint at a couple hundred years of history, despite all sorts of complications & caveats in the details.

User error. 😭

(Deleted a post on party diffs for candidate hope b/c both parties were rating the Dem, not their own. Oof! 🤦)
