Wash Post: The Department of Homeland Security has announced the end of temporary protected status for a group of nearly 4,000 Burmese nationals — mostly persecuted Christians and democracy advocates. This action will send them back to a junta bent on punishing them.

As the article describes it, the movie compiles songs from other deeply racist movies/shows with blackface (including ones done by the leads in White Christmas) but is mostly shorn of the explicit racism.

**Part of this is what their worldview tells them, and part of it is that Christian nationalists tend to live in communities with "high walls," meaning they're surrounded by people who agree with the worldview, and don't very often encounter people who reject it. They're often very nice within it!

Unfortunately, I think there’s a gap between what we believe/know and what we teach. I haven’t seen popular intro textbooks describing let alone focusing on the various supremacisms that continue to define our politics. I imagine it’s unusual for most intro teaching.

A lot of conservative behavior makes sense when you realize their hierarchy is man over woman, adult over child, white over non-white, straight over gay, Christian above everyone else.

This is the key part. Only Christian Americans are allowed to confidently proclaim the truth of their beliefs, if anyone else does it they’re trying to “ram their beliefs down your throat.”

Thread. This is a crucial thing for non-Christian Americans to understand. Most Christian Nationalists think it’s an act of kindness on their part to tell you that you will be going to hell if you don’t convert. It’s incomprehensible to most of them that they’re being bigots.

I'm going to tell my favorite story again about reflecting the certainty of beliefs back at people who don't expect it.

A friend was one of the few Jews on faculty at a North Dakota University. Every year, his colleague in religious studies would invite him to come to his religious studies class...
