It’s pretty astonishing. December was 8-10°F above normal across much of the Western US. The area shaded in dark red equals the warmest December on record. A huge area. Overall the US finished December 3°F above normal despite a chilly Northeast.

COLD & SNOWY EUROPE! Brutal cold across N. Europe (20°C below norm now) will overspread most of Europe soon, with cold dropping into the #Mediterranean, #Italy and the #Balkans. Over the next 10 days heavy snow will fall in spots… 1/

Why is New Year’s so #cold in #Florida? It’s simple. There’s a big mountain of warm air (relative to normal) over Greenland and Eastern Canada. That is blocking cold air from moving east through Canada and instead it’s being rerouted (like a detour) into the Deep South.

Climate change intensifies the water cycle. A generalization: Rich get richer. Poor get poorer.
Not always true, but a good rule of thumb.
1) Generally speaking, global warming is causing both precipitation AND evaporation to intensify. This figure (from Ficklin et al 2022), shows the expected change by late Century in precipitation intensity (top panel), and similarly the change in evaporative demand (bottom panel)

The Absurd December US heatwave is ending. Last 7 days: 4700 heat records (mins & maxs) vs only 55 cold records.
7 day anomalies up to +25° F. Dozens of monthly records smashed.
The heat dome was forced by a very blocky global pattern, but the intensity is virtually impossible b4 climate change.
December 29, 2025 at 5:08 AM
87 in Tulsa OK yesterday! Ludicrous for late December.
This heatwave is not getting the attention it deserves because it’s not 110 in mid-summer. But in terms of anomalies & # of records, it’s virtually unprecedented/ virtually impossible in the absence of manmade climate change. Last 7 days…

If you like cold & snow in the East, the pattern the next 2 weeks is text book!
Watch as a Giant Greenland Block intensifies and retrogrades across the Canadian Tundra thru the period, forcing cold air deep south, trapping it in the East US. This pattern may even have potential for Southern snow 1/

NEW: Latest models double down on the Frigid 🥶#Florida Feel this week! These are the wake-up wind chills Old Man Winter will deliver Wednesday (NYE) morning! We #FL mets are used to models backing off cold as we get close. Not this time. #Cold is coming.

After an extraordinary holiday heat dome across the US, get ready for a Polar Vortex Invasion next week! Cold air will surge deep South w/ 20s in the SE and 30s far into #Florida. The airmass won’t be super #cold up north. Instead the South will get the brunt, 15-20° below normal!

Mother Nature is about to have a Major mood swing! After historic December heat across much of the nation, a large chunk of the nation is about to feel whiplash, going from 20° above normal to 20° below normal.
December 26, 2025 at 1:45 PM
The week has been off the charts warm for much of the country!! Top: Departure from normal last 7 days (dark red +20°) Bottom: Record highs day by day.
Hottest US Christmas on record by a long shot!

Astonishing feat!
US will break its record for the warmest Christmas by ~5°F! That’s remarkable.
Anomalies are up to +40°F in the nation’s middle and as you can see the US has the warmest air - relative to average - in the World!

Parts of SoCal have reached the 1-in-50 to 1-in-100 year recurrence interval (purple/ magenta). This means the chance of an event this extreme in these specific isolated areas is only 1-2% in any year. Several inches have piled up, heavy rain persists, and run off from higher elevations continues.
December 24, 2025 at 11:04 PM
Big storms slamming #California for the next 72 hours. Very rough to near impossible travel in higher Terrain. But much needed #snow for the Sierra-Nevada Ski Resorts, not to mention for the snowpack.
70 mph gusts and flooding in spots too. Stay safe all! #storm

Heads up! The coldest air of the season for many in #Florida arrives next week. This will be a prolonged event, from Tuesday through Saturday.
Here’s a look at wind chills New Year’s morning. Bundle up!! #cold #winter #newyear

It’s wild!
-70°F in Canada today. The coldest December reading in 50+ years (since 1975!)
Meanwhile the US is En Fuego with 100s of record highs!
Dallas hit 81 today. And the contrast is huge, over 150°F across North America.

A 180!
After a record hot Christmas across the Middle & parts of the South, a New Year’s Arctic Blast promises a Deep South Freeze by New Year’s Eve. Gonna be quite the shock to the system, with 20s into North FL, 30s Central FL, and this one temps may actually reach far South FL with 40s!
December 23, 2025 at 1:22 PM
To help illustrate the insane gradient in North America Monday I added a couple of numbers.
76 in Denver wasn’t even the national high. That was 90 in Hidalgo TX.
Braeburn was indeed the NA low. (These are actual temps, not feels like)

Warmest Christmas 🎄 on record?!
Watch as two smaller heat domes combine to form a Huge Christmas Heat Dome - the most intense on record in the Nation’s middle.
Half of US States will set heat records. 100s will fall!
The only escape will be the West Coast and Northeast. #weather #christmas #record
