Gift article. That day should have changed everything — in pretty much the exact opposite direction to the way things have turned out.

Good review here of the crushing, colossal, repeated failures of principle and courage which turned the outcome of that dreadful day completely inside out.

Jan Crawford's attack on SCOTUS "corruption" narrative was its own substance-free narrative
On Face the Nation, CBS News's chief legal correspondent went after Supreme Court critics as "dangerous." And yet, her court defense was completely lacking in specifics.

We underestimate how impactful harassment and threats of violence are on politicians. Clear, large uptick in the number of major incumbent politicians not running/retiring specifically due to harassments and threats of violence. The harassers are like 0.1% of the population but hugely impactful.

If you got away from news over the holidays, good for you.

You can catch up on some of the key news at Law Dork, where I covered:

Supreme Court, on a 6-3 vote, rejects Trump's effort to deploy National Guard in Illinois for now
More than two months after DOJ asked for "immediate" relief, the Supreme Court said no on Tuesday. Also: A Kavanaugh note on Kavanaugh stops.

I deleted an earlier post praising Hilton for stating that ICE agents were not welcome.

Hilton states "This hotel is independently owned and operated, and the actions referenced are not reflective of Hilton values.”

Well, telling ICE to get lost reflects my values.

It’s genuinely wild that the United States spent decades building an elaborate rules-based international order which de facto cemented its permanent status as the dominant global hegemon, sustained by ideology rather than might, and now is just blowing it all up for literally no reason

Much of the world should fight Trump over Greenland if they don’t want to be next.

But it’s the same collective action problem causing all the domestic institutions to fold.
TAPPER: Can you rule out the US is going to take Greenland by force?

MILLER: Greenland should be part of the US. By what right does Denmark assert control over Greenland? The US is the power of NATO
